A COLLEGE near Holsworthy has spoken of its pride after unveiling a ‘refreshed and forward-thinking vision’ for its sixth form.
It is said that at the heart of the four day week, described as ‘innovative’, condenses the teaching that students at Shebbear College receive into the shortened week in order to provide students with an optional day where they can pursue paid work, placements or independent study each week on a Friday.
However, the college remains open to students on that day, with those who attend still able to benefit from a range of co-curricular activities and time spent with tutors.
As well as providing students with the opportunity to ‘take greater ownership’ of their time in order to better prepare them for life beyond the college, there will also be changes to what students are allowed to wear to reflect ‘modern professional standards’. Jackets and ties are no longer required, and smart trainers are permitted, allowing students to feel comfortable whilst reflecting today’s workplace.
"This is a bold step forward," said Charlie Jenkins, head at Shebbear College. "We want our Sixth Formers to feel trusted, empowered, and ready for the real world. The four-day week gives them the freedom to explore interests, gain experience, and develop independence, while still receiving the same high-quality teaching and support."
To support access and recognise excellence, Shebbear College has also announced that its Sixth Form Scholarship application process is now open for Year 11 pupils considering entry in September 2026. These scholarships, supported by the College’s owners, Inspired Learning Group (ILG), offer significant fee discounts.
