Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League report and summary scores

SKIPPER Mark Hodgson led from the front as Werrington seconds moved to within seven points of safety in County Division One after a thrilling three-wicket victory at neighbours Launceston.

The Ladycross outfit went into the game 20 points behind their fellow strugglers and knew that realistically they could ill-afford to lose.

Launceston skipper Kevin Worth won the toss and chose to bat on a green track and initially it looked as if it’d pay off, as Robert Mutch struck three boundaries in the first over.

However, Mutch (22) and fellow opener Michael Diebner (4) were soon dismissed, both caught at first slip by Nick Ward.

Although Dan Tilley went cheaply to Danny Warne (2-19), Launceston rebuilt their innings with Sam Pengelly (28) and Michael Bolt (23) contributing.

Worth reached his fifth half century of the season but the hosts’ lack of batting depth proved costly as Werrington fought back, Wakefield taking 3-32 as Launceston were dismissed for 163.

Werrington openers Nick Adams (7) and Ian Searle (12) knew that if they could see off Mutch and Pengelly that they would go along way to winning the game, and initially they did that before Adams was trapped lbw by Pengelly.

Searle was soon run-out by Phil Spry after a mix up with Ward before the latter was caught behind by Tilley off Matt Bloomfield for 12.

This brought Hodgson to the crease and along with John Moon steadied the ship without any real alarms, taking them to within 50 of victory.

Mutch returned to dismiss Moon (25) and Darren Johns (0) in the space of three balls, although Johns was perhaps unlucky to be given out lbw by umpire Gary Mason, who gave six of the eight leg-befores to fall on the day.

For as long as Hodgson was there, Werrington were the clear favourites to win it and although Warne only managed three himself, he hung around gamely as Hodgson used his experience to rotate the strike and capitalise on any loose balls.

Although Warne and Ian Worsnip fell with less than 20 required, third team captain Dan Jenkin (7no) applied himself as he and Hodgson (52no) guided them to victory with 12 balls remaining, although their cause was helped by 47 extras.

Saturday sees Werrington host bottom side St Austell seconds and Launceston go to mid-table Troon (both 1pm).

In the Premier, champions Werrington got back to winning ways with a comfortable seven-wicket victory over Wadebridge at Ladycross.

After choosing to bat, the visitors got off to a disastrous start as openers Matt Jolliffe and Sam Richards were both dismissed without scoring by Tom Dinnis (2-32).

Overseas player Kevin Renecke and former Werrington player James Turpin rebuilt the innings by adding 59 for the third wicket before Turpin was dismissed by Jono Baldock (3-35) for 17.

Renecke (45) was trapped lbw by the miserly Ben Smeeth (2-16) to initiate a collapse which saw them slip from 85-3 to 99-7.

However, youngster Jamie Beare (26) and Charlie Ellis (30) then fought back as 60 were added before they were bowled out with five balls unused.

Werrington were in a spot of bother at 17-2 with Smeeth (0) and Matt Robins (17) both back in the pavilion.

However Dinnis, who was opening in the continued absence of Adam Hodgson, made 29 to get them to 59-3.

From there on, Paul Smith and Mark Gribble showed their class, putting on an unbeaten 104 with Smith making 71 and Gribble 49.

Callington took a weakened team down to Penzance and were on the wrong end of a heavy defeat.

The hosts racked up 350-2 with Scott Harvey carrying his bat for 122. At the other end was where the carnage really happened as Ryan Edwards made 77, Jack Paull 21 and Tom Wells a 50-ball unbeaten 103 for his third successive century.

For Callington, overseas player Yannick Leonard bowled economically as did Aidan Libby.

The chase for the East Cornwall club was all about ensuring they got as many batting points as possible although they only managed one, falling a single run short of the 125 required for a second.

Number eight James Boundy enjoyed himself at the end, thrashing 40 not out off just 20 balls while Alex Robinson and Nick Parker both passed 20.

In Division Two East, only Bude managed a victory from the three Post area teams.

They chased down 220 at home to bottom side St Erme to win by four wickets with five balls remaining.

In the visitors’ innings, off-spinners Andrew De Rosa (2-54) and Matt Williams (3-52) shared five wickets before both men batted aggressively in the chase.

With skipper Mark McManus batting patiently for an unbeaten 56, Williams (67 off 74) and De Rosa (39 off 39) upped the ante before a couple of late wickets meant it got closer than it needed to be.

Luckett were missing almost half of their first choice side for the trip to struggling Ladock and it showed as they lost by 85 runs.

Angus Harley (3-53) and Andrew Hoskin (3-44) both took three wickets as Ladock were held to 200-8 off their 45 overs.

In reply, only Hoskin and Harley, with 27 and 21 not out respectively, passed 20 as they came up well short.

Ladock’s win means they now move out of the bottom two after St Minver were well beaten at home to high-flying Menheniot-Looe.

The visitors racked up an imposing 303 with Charlie Coates thrashing 109 off just 81 balls. Hamish Rathbone kept up his fine record in recent weeks with 5-61.

St Minver managed 196 in reply to pick up nine losing bonus points, skipper Ben Hawken leading the way with 99.

Holsworthy are now 11 from 11 in Division Three East as the leaders chased down 225 at mid-table St Neot.

For once the Devon-based club didn’t have it all their own way with change bowlers Rob Mitchell (2-42) and Ben Hutchings (2-29) doing the majority of damage in the moorland club’s 224-6.

However the Stanhope Park outfit seem to find a way to win and motored to their target with more than six overs to spare.

After the top three of Jack May (43), Aiden Gerry (28) and Matt Shepherd (21) got them off to a good start, skipper Ryan Walter (48no) and the fit-again Sam Stacey (67no) did the rest with ease.

Callington seconds are now 26 points behind second-placed St Blazey after losing to their Bude counterparts at Moores Park.

Callington had to bring in the old guard due to first-team call-ups and initially it didn’t look to matter as they knocked up 230-8, opener Lee Cosgrove making 77 while extras was 52.

The experienced trio of Gary Moore (3-29), Mike Taylor (2-47) and Gordon Wint (2-57) shared the wickets.

Struggling Bude knocked off the runs with two balls to go thanks to an unbeaten 77 from opener Matt Whitefield, a massive helping of extras (66) and 33 apiece from Wint and Charlie Gliddon.

Tintagel’s gradual improvement continues as they beat bottom side Launceston seconds by 70 runs at Butts Field.

The hosts were grateful to the visitors’ generosity in a total of 178-9, which included 51 extras.

Only two home batsmen, Matt Pethick (24) and Chris Lovegrove (20) passed 20 although six others reached double figures.

Tommy Davey took 3-40 off nine overs although the star was David Cox who had the excellent figures of 1-14 off his 12.

In reply, it turned into the Jason Seldon show as he ran through the Launceston order to claim 6-43.

Only a last wicket partnership of over 20 involving the Daveys, Tommy (25no) and Matt (13) helped them reach triple figures.

South Petherwin have struggled in recent weeks and were on the wrong end of a nine-wicket thrashing at Newquay seconds.

After being sent in, Petherwin collapsed to 60-7 with only Adrian Warne (20) making any impression.

However the tail of Adrian Clements (27), Mike Townsend (11no) and Kevin Horrell (14) added 60 for the last three wickets to give them a chance.

But despite Paul Clements getting the early of wicket of Chris Jordan for eight, Tom Rhodes (42no) and Aaron Hawken (60no) had no problems in knocking off the total in just 22.2 overs.

Delabole bounced back from their humbling defeat to Saltash St Stephens last time out as they picked up their first win of the season at Grampound Road thirds in Division Four East.

Glen Burrell made an unbeaten 90 with Jordan Blanchard (25) and Adrian Pooley (34no) also making steady contributions in their 206-4.

The visitors had a near full-strength team for the first time this season and it showed, as Blanchard (making his first appearance of the season) bowled superbly to claim 5-28 off his ten overs as Grampound were held to 188-7.

High-flying Werrington thirds lost by six wickets at Duloe.

Teenager James Adams’s unbeaten 56 was his first half-century in adults cricket while Toby Ward (35), Ian Wills (32) and Keith Moore (30no) all reached 30 in their 178-4.

However exciting opener Dan Carroll then thrashed an unbeaten 97 as the hosts eased to victory.

Luckett seconds were well beaten by leaders Bugle at Chapel Field.

After choosing to bat, Luckett reached 115 with skipper Steve Brown (35no) and Martin Budge (30) the main run-getters.

After an early wobble, Bugle knocked off the runs with the Couchmans — Nigel (29no) and Sam (33no) — seeing them over the line.

It was a great Saturday for both Post area clubs in Division Five East as South Petherwin seconds and Milton Abbot both won.

Half centuries from James Cawsey (54) and skipper Gareth Clements (50no) helped Petherwin knock up 216-3 at home to their winless St Neot counterparts before Peter Dingle ran through the visitors to finish with 5-47 in a 41-run victory.

Openers Paul Crocker and Richard Baxter both made exactly 50 as Milton Abbot won by 128 runs at St Erme seconds.

Ian Tarbotton added a late 25 in their 228-6 which proved far too much for the Castle Field outfit, Tom Rickard claiming 5-22.

Leaders St Minver seconds fell to their first defeat of the season in Division Six East at Werrington fourths.

Things looked rosy at the halfway stage as Matt Gilbert made an unbeaten 106 and fellow opener Jake Keast chipped in with 74 in an imposing 259-4.

However, skipper Nigel Dennis led from the front with 124 not out, ending the match with a six with three balls to go.

He received brilliant support from Alan Hockin (67) and Adam Paynter (35).

It was a different sort of contest at Lawhitton as Launceston thirds beat St Stephen seconds by ten wickets.

The visitors were dismissed for just 61 with 31 off those coming by extras.

Oliver Sheldrake, on his first ever adult league appearance for Launceston, claimed 4-5 with Brett Grosvenor, Al Cartwright and Emma Barnes sharing the other six wickets for 18.

Lewis Matthews (43no) and Paddy Webber (19no) then knocked off the runs.

Gunnislake returned to winning ways with a comfortable victory over winless Boconnoc seconds at Hawkmoor.

The Emmerson twins — David (60) and Adam (52) — each passed 50 in their 206-7 before Kai Murray-Dustan (4-29) and Iain Barker (3-27) did the bulk of the damage in Boconnoc’s reply of 138-8.

Tintagel seconds remain in mid-table after going down by 82 runs to St Austell fourths at Wheal Eliza.

St Austell reached 185 before being bowled out with David Lane (3-35) and Aaron Washer (4-28) in the wickets.

However the visitors reply never really got going with only last man Peter Ellis (26) passing 20.
