BUDE have announced 20-year-old New Zealander Charlie Hoban will be their overseas player for the 2026 season.
The Seasiders have enjoyed the services of Australian left-arm fast bowler Brett Hunter for the last three summers – but following his decision to try his luck in the West of England Premier One at Chard, skipper Warren Rumble has gone for a spin-bowling all-rounder as they look to avoid another relegation battle in Division Two East of the Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League.
Reflecting on his new recruit, who plays for Old Boys Collegians in Christchurch, Rumble said: “I’m very pleased to get Charlie sorted and over the line. There were several other applicants, but Charlie really stood out, coming across as a super genuine bloke that just loves his cricket!”
This won’t be Hoban’s first trip over to the UK having turned out for Finchley last summer in the Middlesex County League Division One where he helped his side secure promotion as runners-up.
Rumble continued: “Charlie is going to give a boost that we’ve needed in the higher middle-order and send down nine overs of off-spin! He played in London last season and took 28 wickets in all competitions, so I’m very much hoping for more of the same!”
Not replacing Hunter’s pace means Bude will have the slowest attack in the division as it stands, not that Rumble is bothered.
He concluded: “Instead of going for a pace bowler, I thought if we got someone who can bat high and bowl, he has two chances to effect the game. Also, usually spinners always finish near the top of the wicket-takers in our league, which shows how important they are.
“On top of that, Charlie is also a Level Two coach, so I’m looking forward to him getting involved and helping out with the juniors, ladies and men’s sides.”
