EXCITEMENT is building ahead of one the most important week in the community and social calendar of Holsworthy.

The St Peter’s Fair Week, an event steeped in history involving parts which go back to a thousand years will be held from July 4 until July 12.

Central to the week is some events that are steeped in history, long storied and cemented in the folklore of the town.

This includes the holding of the court of the Portreeve on July 7, an event much enjoyed by locals and providing a lively, joyous way to start the historical aspects of the event.

At noon on Wednesday, July 8, the steps of the town’s historic Church of St Peter and St Paul, the first day of the fair, the doors of the church will open to unveil the latest in a long line of young women who have borne the honour of being a ‘pretty maid’.

Immediately after this, the pretty maid along with invited dignitaries and her family will officially open the fun fair.

In amongst the time-honoured traditions, there will be fun for all the family. There will be a fun fair, exhibitions and competitions across the town while in the evenings of Wednesday, July 8, to Saturday, July 11, there will be live music on the fair stage each night providing something for everyone. In the evening of Saturday, July 11, there will be a firework finale.

Cllr Jon Hutchings, the mayor of Holsworthy and the co-ordinator for the schedule of entertainment that takes place across St Peter’s Fair week in the town, said: “The fair committee would like to say a massive thank you to all our sponsors and the National Lottery who help keep the entertainment during St Peter’s Fair week free for all.
