ADAM Peaty may have inspired the nation with his world record and gold medal in 100 metres breaststroke at the Rio Olympic games but it is Holsworthy’s Adam Davey who is the one to watch out for.

Setting himself a brand new challenge to conquer, Adam, the 35-year-old swim school co-ordinator at Holsworthy’s 1610 leisure centre will take on the Aspire Channel Swim.

This challenge will see him swimming 22 miles in 12 weeks in order to raise money for a charity that helps people affected by spinal cord injury.

Every eight hours someone is paralysed by a spinal chord injury and there is no known cure.

In between teaching lessons at Holsworthy Leisure Centre Adam will swim 22 miles, which will amount to around half a mile each session, four times a week over the next few months.

As well as raising much-needed funds for the Aspire charity, Adam hopes his swim will inspire his swim school pupils. He wants them to learn about the benefits of swimming, which is an essential life skill that not only improves fitness but also can change lives.

Adam said: “I am always encouraging my swim school pupils to do their very best by learning to swim or by improving their swimming technique so I thought I would challenge myself this time to get fitter and to help others.

“I hope the local community will join me in supporting this charity by sponsoring me or having a go at the swim challenge themselves.

“Swimming is one of the best sports for overall fitness whatever your age and it can change lives for the better as this challenge illustrates.”

Managers of Holsworthy Leisure Centre, 1610, have been running a campaign called ‘1610 reasons to swim’. The scheme is designed to promote key benefits of swimming on health.

They are encouraging adults, and babies alike, to take up swimming — a key life skill and a sport that can enhance leisure and healthy lifestyles. For more information on the campaign visit www.1610.org.uk/blog/1610-reasons-swim.
