SOUTH WEST PENINSULA LEAGUE PREMIER WEST (SATURDAY)
Millbrook 0 Holsworthy 4
HOLSWORTHY made it seven points from a possible nine to start the season with an impressive 4-0 victory at Millbrook on Saturday.
The Magpies headed to the far end of South East Cornwall looking to build on encouraging results against Launceston (1-0) and Wadebridge Town, while boss Kevin Squire made two change from the side that had seen off the Bridgers as Kieran Jollow was recalled in defence and young striker Elis Aldrich started in the absence of veteran Craig Duff-Dick.
The Brook had beaten Bude and Penzance in their three games, but after an even opening 20 minutes in difficult conditions at Jenkins Park, the Magpies took charge.
Just before the midway point of the half, Gavin Carter tried his luck from distance and his shot deflected off Rob Pearce to wrongfoot keeper Allan Tercjak.
From there there was no looking back for Holsworthy who played nice football and kept Millbrook at bay as the hosts created very little to trouble Ryan Chadwick in goal.
The second goal came on the half-hour when man-of-the-match Ben Sharpe ran in behind the defence to find himself one-on-one with Tercjak, and he finished well to make it 2-0. Chances continued to come but it wasn’t until right on half-time that the third goal arrived.
A shot from the edge of the box was saved low to his right by the keeper, but it fell kindly to Sharpe who was on hand to finish well and send Holsworthy into the break with a healthy advantage.
The second half was pretty comfortable for Holsworthy who made several changes and continued to create chances.
Ben Grech had a good shot saved well by the Millbrook number one and Elis Aldrich on another day could have had a goal or two that his work-rate deserved.
In the end they had to settle for one more goal in the second half, coming from a neat finish from the edge of the box from Rob Pearce to cap off a brilliant 4-0 result for Holsworthy that continues there unbeaten run to the start of the season.
Reflecting on the game, Holsworthy’s new manager Kevin Squire, told the Post on Monday: “I thought it was a good performance and the players were brilliant in difficult conditions.
“The football we played at times was really good and we put them under pressure all over the pitch and fully deserved our goals.
“I liked our organisation and even though we made several subs during the second half, I thought our shape was still good.
“Jedd (Peschke) and Callum (Martyn) were outstanding at the back dealing with a decent striker, while the midfield never stopped running with Jay, Aiden and Rob working well together.
Finally, the front two were brilliant. Sharpey (Ben Sharpe) got his goals and Elis did everything but score.
“Overall it was a very good team performance and hopefully we can take that into our next fixtures.”
The Magpies are due to visit Elburton Villa tomorrow night (7.30pm) before heading to newly-promoted Falmouth Town Reserves on Saturday (3pm).
