Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League Division Two East round-up – Saturday, August 9
ST MINVER have a 14-point gap to make up on third bottom Werrington Seconds following a seven-wicket defeat to third-placed Callington Seconds on Saturday.
Not helping matters was Holsworthy’s six-wicket success at Wadebridge Seconds and with Bude, as expected seeing off all but relegated St Austell Thirds, the villagers have it all to do to survive.
Against Callington, St Minver found themselves in all sorts of trouble at 71-7 with only Antony Ash (29) making much impression as Ryan Hodge took 4-33 having been given the new ball.
That became 96-8 but the hosts were given a chance by a fine rearguard action from Archie Edwards (39) and Dean Jeffery (31no) as they put on 71 to give them a chance at 177 all out.
But Ben Allsop smacked 46 from just 30 balls as Cally reached 74-2.
Rich Brown fell for 23, but Blake Tancock (37no) and his dad, Peter (25no), made no mistake with an unbroken stand of 57.
Werrington’s depleted side put in a fine effort at leaders Luckett before going down by 48 runs at Chapel Field.
Visiting skipper Jason Seldon (5-27 off 7.2) and Nick Oldaker (2-24 off 9) bowled superbly as the three key wickets of Luke Brenton, Toby May and Andrew Hoskin fell for just one between them.
But Luckett are top for a reason and ground out a score of 192 with Jonny Hoskin (33), Ryan Brown (31), Henry Wilkinson (25) and Marc Brown (23) all making important contributions. Dan Howgill took 3-37 with his leg-spin.
Werrington were short of batting but the dangerous Rob May attacked from the outset, making a rapid 51.
Despite being expensive, Leion Cole (1-32 off 4) and Andrew Hoskin (2-36 off 5) got crucial breakthroughs including Tom Lyle for just nine, and once the change bowling of Mark Southcott (4-16 off 8) and George Wilkinson (0-23 off 8) and Jonny Hoskin (3-33) came on, Werrington had no answer as they eventually were dismissed for 144.
Holsworthy made it four wins in a row with an impressive six-wicket success at Wadebridge Seconds.
Rob Mitchell was handed the new ball and the left-armer took 4-30 as the hosts slipped to 30-4.
A 96-run stand between paul Menhenick (40) and Kieran Gill (69) halted the momentum, before they eventually reached 194 all out. Graham Wild took 3-48 while Aussie Noah pigdon (1-15 off 6.2) gave little away.
Holsworthy lost Aiden Gerry early on to Ollie Bate, but the chase was a routine affair with Jack Greening, Brendan Harris and Dan Smith all making half centuries.
Greening struck 55 of the first 75 runs scored to give his side a quick start, before Harris (56 off 94) and Smith (51no) held their nerve superbly as they moved 18 points clear of St Minver before their home clash with Werrington on Saturday.
Bude could ill-afford to lose at home to St Austell Thirds and made no mistake in an eight-wicket victory.
Brett Hunter (3-31) and Matt Williams (2-31) shared five wickets as the Saints made 177 all out led by Henry Johnson’s battling 57, and despite giving the visitors a sniff at 64-2, unbeaten half centuries from skipper Warren Rumble (50no off 55) and Matt Whitefield (65 off 64) gives the Seasiders a healthy 26-point cushion with three games remaining.
