WERRINGTON skipper Nick Lawson admitted Penzance deserved to ‘stuff us’ after the champions romped to a ten-wicket success at St Clare on Saturday.
A 40-over game getting underway at 2pm was eventually reduced to 32 overs per side following a further shower, but Werrington were bundled out for just 40 in 21.5 overs as Penzance, led by former Tron favourite Tom Dinnis, ran wild.
He took 4-13 from his seven overs, while Tommy Sturgess (2-14 off 7), Mehran Sanwal (2-6 off 4) and Josh Croom (2-7 off 3.5) all chipped in.
Christian Purchase (23no) and Jack Paull (20no) then knocked the target off in seven overs.
Lawson told the Post: “It’s just one of those games we just have to sweep under the carpet and move on.
“There’s still 12 games to go and our season won’t be defined by what happens against Penzance.”
He continued: “I wouldn’t say the game was decided by the toss as they bowled unbelievably and it was by far the best attack I’ve ever faced in Premier League cricket.
“Both Dinnis and Sturgess put the ball in the right area consistently and got their rewards, and it goes to show the depth they have in their pace attack when they could bring on Sanwal and Croom.
“The pitch was a bit green and had plenty of moisture, but hats off to Penzance, they deserved to stuff us.”
Werrington are 10 points clear of bottom side Grampound Road and visit seventh-placed St Just on Saturday (1pm).
Lawson added: “The league is already a bit of a top five and bottom five, so any game against a team in and around us is going to be big.
“They’re always difficult to beat at home and have a good spin attack, but we also have four or five spinners, so hopefully that can work in our favour as well.”
