Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League Division Two East round-up – Saturday, May 9
PROMOTED sides Tintagel and Menheniot-Looe both produced fine upsets on Saturday with skippers Matt Jolliffe and Steve Kidd leading from the front.
Tintagel welcomed relegated St Austell Seconds and despite a fine start and five wickets between Gyles Reynolds (3-40) and Jack Minehan (2-44), found themselves on the end of a fine comeback from James Carter (90no) and Ryan Bennetts (71no) as they put on 120 for the sixth wicket to drag them to a hefty 280-7.
However, Butts Field is a small ground and Tintagel cruised to victory despite a late flurry of wickets.
Australian Leo Agacy got the ball rolling with a quickfire 39 before Jordan Burnard (22) joined Jolliffe as they put on 86.
But the acceleration was provided by Ryan Pooley as he thrashed 58 from just 31 balls in a stand of 104.
He departed with 36 still required and when Jolliffe went for a fine 117 off 120 balls (17 fours, three sixes), it was game on.
However, Sam Abbott (11), Jonny Centini (12) and Adrian Pooley (12no) all held their nerve despite Tom Rosevear’s 3-55.
Menheniot-Looe chased down 216 to beat Callington Seconds at Gunnislake.
Earlier, Peter Tancock’s fine 61 and 37 from Blaze Eigenmann got Cally there as opening bowlers Lachlan Embleton (2-53) and Steve Kidd (3-25) shared five wickets. Mike Maiden sent down nine overs for just 25 and dismissed Tancock.
At 15-2 Menheniot needed a partnership, and it was Embleton and Kidd that provided it.
While the former made 57, it was Kidd who led the way, finishing 105 not out in a seven-wicket success.
Champions St Blazey fought back to win by 23 runs at Bude who were left to rue some costly errors.
Blazey were 83-3 at drinks, but gradually upped the ante with Olly Mitchell’s fine 51 not out the catalyst after Dan Kendall (24) and Matt Bray (33) had fought back. New overseas signing Charlie Hoban took 3-71.
A chase of 230 at Bude is often doable, but Blazey’s attack gave little away, led by the excellence of Nithin Gowda (1-21 off 9) and captain Rory Dixon’s 5-34.
Bude were behind the eight-ball from the outset and although skipper Warren Rumble made 37, it needed a fine 84 not out from Hoban with help from Harry Dymond (20no) to give the Seasiders nine bonus points as they closed on 206-8.
Two sides with title ambitions – Lanhydrock and Wadebridge Seconds – proved too strong for their opponents.
Wadebridge knocked up a hefty 314-6 at home to Holsworthy, opener Tom McLachlan leading the way with 90.
Quickfire contributions from Jamie Beare (35), Sam Richards (44), Paul Menhenick (37) and Ross McLachlan (60no) ensured the runs kept flowing as only Bilal Darbar (2-59) got much reward.
Holsworthy lost wickets throughout the chase but did scramble up to 147 all out thanks to 33 from number nine Rob Mitchell. Steve Gunner took 4-23.
Lanhydrock’s bowlers restricted Werrington Seconds to just 158-8 at Ladycross, the pick being Ruben Turner who took 2-11 from his nine.
For the hosts, Dan Jenkin made 45 from number seven.
The chase was a routine affair as after openers Amir Khan (50) and Mike Horne (34) added 72, Christian James reached his half century in just 28 balls. Ian Searle (2-31) got some reward.
