Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League scores and reports from Saturday, May 25 and Monday, May 27
WERRINGTON bounced back from their opening day defeat to Redruth by enjoying a double success over the Bank Holiday weekend in the ECB Cornwall Premier League.
Last year’s champions welcomed Callington to Ladycross on Saturday and eased to a 135-run success.
Matt Robins made 118 in Werrington’s 291-7 with Paul Smith (40), Ben Smeeth (32) and Nick Lawson (38) all making handy contributions. Adam Snowdon took 2-50.
In response, Dan Barnard (2-23) and Ian Worsnip (1-37) reduced Callington to 13-3 before Joe White (56) and Oliver Allsop (64) hauled the visitors into contention with a 112-run partnership.
However the introduction of spinners Smeeth (4-17) and Adam Hodgson (1-28) proved too much as they were eventually dismissed for just 156.
On Monday, Werrington were given a stiff examination at Grampound Road before coming away with a 24-run victory.
After being sent in, the visitors were reduced to 60-4 before a 69-run partnership involving Mark Gribble (47) and Ben Smeeth (37) allowed them to eventually scramble up to 167 all out. A rain delay meant that Grampound required 169 from 48 overs.
It was the Werrington spin trio of Smeeth, Matt Robins and Adam Hodgson that came to the fore, sharing eight wickets between them for 74 off 28 overs as Grampound inexplicably had ten overs unused when they were bowled out.
Callington fell to their third successive defeat as they were well beaten at home to St Austell on Monday despite drafting in four players who normally play outside of the county.
After choosing to bat, St Austell totalled 251-7 off their 50 overs, Alex Bone making an unbeaten 106 while Hugh Parkinson weighed in with 52.
Skipper Joe White — usually a wicketkeeper — bowled ten overs and took 2-55.
White’s decent day continued with 29 in the response but from 58-5 the game was as good as gone although James Boundy’s 32 helped them reach 147.
In County Division One Launceston enjoyed a perfect 40-point weekend with wins over St Austell seconds and Rosudgeon (see picture above) although Werrington seconds remain without a victory since the opening day.
On Saturday an understrength side were comfortably beaten at Lanhydrock. Darren Webber (2-48), Mark Hodgson (2-50) and John Moon (2-33) shared six wickets in the home side’s 245-8 before Werrington replied with 163, 53 of which came from Adam Jenkin.
Jenkin’s good weekend with the bat continued on Monday against Troon at Ladycross.
After choosing to bat, Werrington knocked up 266-8 with Jenkin, Mark Hodgson and debutant James White (64) all making important contributions.
However Troon’s openers, Dan Jenkin (137no) and Grant Rowe (84) then put on a double century partnership of 219 as they eased home with 17 balls to spare.
Luckett made it three successive defeats after losing twice over the weekend.
On Saturday they were comfortably beaten at Grampound Road by six wickets after making just 135, 55 of which came from Jack Sleep before losing a high-scoring clash at home to Menheniot-Looe on Monday.
Half centuries from brothers Richard (74) and Ryan Brown (54) set them on their way to 273-8 before the visitors cruised over the line with seven wickets in-hand.
Bude’s up and down season continued with a win and a defeat.
On Saturday they saw off a spirited Ladock in a contest which saw over 470 runs. Warren Rumble top-scored for Bude with 87 in their 244-5 with Matt Hookway (45), Mark McManus (46) and James Findlay (39no off 21) all in the runs before spinners Derek Piper (4-63), Matt Williams (2-64) and Andrew De Rosa (2-32) did the business.
Wadebridge seconds were the visitors to Crooklets and came away with a six-wicket win with five balls to spare. Bude’s 198-7 was built around Matt Hookway’s 62 and an unbeaten 58 by Matt Williams.
Chris Carter was given a call-up from the seconds and responded by taking 3-23 in an inspired opening spell, however Tom Wood batted right from the start to make 90 and skipper Rob Centini made an unbeaten 64.
St Minver earned their first win of the season by thrashing struggling St Erme on Saturday.
Openers Ben Hawken (45) and Ryan Pooley (46) added 101 before 52 from Tom Preston-Evans guided them up to 255.
Opening bowlers Ross Keast and Charlie Hawken then shared seven wickets as the mid-Cornwall club were dismissed for 155.
Holsworthy made it a perfect seven to start the campaign over the weekend.
Jack May made his first century for the club (119no) in their 233-1 at Roche which the hosts nearly got, ending seven short. Ryan Bridgeman claimed 4-53 while skipper Ryan Walter followed up his unbeaten 59 with 3-16 at the end.
On Monday they beat second-placed St Blazey at Stanhope Park to open up a 23-point gap at the top. In a game reduced to 35 overs because of rain, openers Jack May (53) and Aiden Gerry (47) led the way in an imposing 186-4 which proved 41 too many. Jack Greening continued his fine start to the season with 6-33.
Just four points separate the bottom five teams with everyone winning at least once.
On Saturday, Chris Parkes’ unbeaten 101 guided Bude seconds to a nine-wicket success at home to South Petherwin, who had earlier made 180 all out, 34 of those coming from Paul Clements.
However the result was switched for both sides 48 hours later.
Mid-table Petherwin eased past Roche twos by 36 runs at Kennards House with teenager Taylor Gerry making 86 and his father Nick, 56 before he retired, in a total of 213-5.
Roche started well and looked set to get close, but all four bowlers — Paul Clements (2-26), Ollie Peterson (4-56), Adrian Clements (2-42) and Michael Searle (2-43) did a good job to bowl them out.
Bude lost by 63 runs to their Launceston counterparts, who still remain bottom.
Launceston recovered from 50-4 after an early going over by Mark Whitefield (3-26) to post 223-7.
Phil Spry (61) and David Sillifant put on 65 for the fifth wicket before Martin Vanstone (14) and Mark Forshaw (50no) with a half-century in less than nine overs propelled them.
Launceston’s opening attack of Matt Bloomfield and David Cox bowled the first 23 overs and between them went for just 44.
However with the dangerous Chris Parkes and Gordon Wint still to come, Bude had a slight chance. But the dismissal of Parkes to spinner Ethan Green (4-60) put pay to that.
However they did bat well towards the end to reach 160-6 with Wint (18), Mark Carter (22) and Mike Ellis (30no) all contributing.
Launceston do remain winless away from home though after a seven-wicket defeat at St Neot on Saturday. James Dawe top-scored with 35 in their 144 all out while Tommy Davey made 22 not out at the end and claimed a couple of late wickets.
Callington seconds and Tintagel served up one of the games of the season so far on Saturday at Moores Park, with Cally taking the honours by just five runs.
Liam Hunn’s career-best 142 not out helped the hosts make 274 before Tintagel replied brilliantly with opener Ryan Pooley crashing 94. Dinesh Thirupuvanarajah was the difference though, snaring 5-69 with his medium pacers while Ashley Small took 3-38.
Callington’s great weekend continued on Monday as they won by 22 runs at St Austell thirds. Nick Parker made 40 in their 149 all out. But Small (4-31) and Andrew Brenton (3-37) ensured that the target was out of the home side’s reach.
An understrength Tintagel fell to a heavy defeat to Newquay seconds at Butts Field on Monday afternoon. The visitors totted up 262-6 before dismissing the coastal club for just 96.
There was a dramatic weekend for Division Four East leaders Werrington thirds, including a tied game at home to Bugle on Saturday.
Both sides made 162 but it was hosts who would have been happier after Bugle failed to get the target despite having four wickets left. Monday saw another thriller at winless Delabole.
Delabole made just 144-9 with Glen Burrell making an unbeaten 48. Nick Ward claimed 5-12 with his sons Freddie (3-18) and Toby (1-7) also performing well.
Werrington got off to a solid start with Nick Ward (24) and Ian Wills (27) both passing 20. However a dramatic collapse instigated by Adrian Pooley and Josh Sanders meant that it was left to Trevor Dingle (11no) and Jack Gribble (17no) to see them over the line.
Delabole were on the wrong end of a seven-wicket defeat at previously winless Luckett seconds on Saturday.
Glen Burrell continued his fantastic start to the season with an unbeaten 95 in their 259-6.
However, Adam Piper struck his maiden league century (114) alongside Patrick Thompson (78no) to get them home.
Luckett were then defeated by ten wickets at their Lanhydrock counterparts on Monday after making just 91-6 off their 40 overs, 42 of which were from Richard Seeley.
In Division Five, both South Petherwin and Milton Abbot won one and lost one with notable personal contributions coming from South Petherwin’s Nick Gerry (101), Peter Dingle (3-37 and 3-43) and Milton Abbot’s Tom Rickard (52no) and Charles Helyer (49no).
Brett Grosvenor struck his first ever century for Launceston thirds at Werrington fourths on Monday, making 131 in their 264-6, which the hosts could only get to within 101 of, ending on 163-5.
Both sides lost on Saturday — Launceston by eight runs at home to Menheniot-Looe thirds and Werrington by 37 runs at Gunnislake — as did Tintagel seconds by three wickets to leaders St Minver. Minver reintroduced their second team over the winter and look set to go close to the title. On Monday they managed a massive 311-2 at home to St Austell fourths, Jake Keast carrying his bat for 152. Tom Durrant took 4-11 in St Austell’s solid reply of 231-6.
Gunnislake’s good start to the season hit a bump at Liskeard, losing by nine wickets after managing just 125.
