CALLINGTON Cobras won the T20 Kernow Crash for the first time as they thrashed defending champions Penzance by six wickets at Grampound Road.

Rob Mutch’s breathtaking spell reduced Greg Smith’s star-studded side to 32-5 before Harry Sawyers’ 4-17 ensured Penzance could only total 104-9 off their 20 overs.

In the chase, Kian Burns cracked 28 off just 11 balls as he and Aidan Libby (31) added 58 for the first wicket in just 5.2 overs, before Dan Davis, Luke Brenton and Ollie Allsop all chipped in to give the South East Cornwall club their first bit of silverware since the Hawkey Cup in 2015.

Callington had earlier won by the same margin against Wadebridge in the morning semi-final before Penzance made it through after grinding out a 20-run victory over Redruth.

Callington skipper Joe White chose to field in the final, backing his attacking batting line-up to chase.

Christian Purchase blasted two boundaries off the first over, bowled by left-arm spinner Matt Petherbridge, before Mutch grabbed his first wicket when he trapped opener Jack Paull leg before wicket for one.

Mutch’s second over was even better as he had the dangerous Purchase (9) superbly held low down by White at mid-off, before earning another leg before decision the very next ball to dismiss Antony Angove for a golden duck.

Callington’s large amount of supporters were in dreamland in the sixth over when Mutch (4-11) castled former Essex and Derbyshire all-rounder Smith (4) with the ball of the match. And when Libby span one through Dan Lello (11) to bowl him, Callington were very much in the box seat.

However, as long as former Leicestershire batsman Tom Wells was there, Penzance had every chance.

He made his way to 31 before an attempted slog sweep off Sawyers was top-edged out to Mutch running in off the deep mid-wicket boundary.

Sawyers’ final over proved decisive as the very next ball he trapped Jonny Ludlam (11) lbw pressing forward, before bowling former Werrington bowler Tom Dinnis two balls later.

At 77-9, the game seemed all but over. However, Charlie Goldsworthy (13no) and Glyn Furnival (12no) batted excellently, including taking 15 off the last over, to get them up to 104-9.

Penzance strangled Redruth in their run chase, but Libby and Burns sought to dominate from the get go.

The first two overs fetched just 10 before Dinnis went for 10 in the third.

The fourth was the most expensive of the day as Burns thrashed Wells for two fours and two maximums, one of which went out of the ground.

Dan Lello’s solitary over was whacked for three fours by Libby before Penzance finally struck when Burns was wonderfully stumped down the leg-side by Goldsworthy off Angove.

Libby was caught at point off Smith at 72-2, but Luke Brenton smashed Angove for six in a quickfire 10 off seven balls.

Rhys Davies went third ball for four, lbw to Smith, but Dan Davis (13no) and Ollie Allsop (15no) kept their cool to take Callington to victory in the most one-sided of finals.
