Believe it or not Bude has had a WI for 100 years.

The institute began life in Queen Street Bude in November 1922. The institute, believed to be the largest in Cornwall, continues to provide the membership with regular meetings, fun get togethers, encouragement to step outside their comfort zone, inspiration to be their true and best self. And, most importantly, a listening ear and friendship.

To celebrate this centenary Bude WI are arranging a variety of events, which will include the installation of a mosaic and a bench facing the River Neet, the planting of a tree, and a celebration dinner.

The members of Bude Women’s Institute commenced their centenary celebrations by taking part in a 100 mile walk on Thursday, July 7.

The objective was for members to walk a distance of their choice and the grand total to be 100 miles or more.

Various pre-measured routes along and around Bude canal were chosen with a total of 48 members taking part.

From the Parkhouse Centre walkers set off in groups or as individuals throughout the day.

The weather was ideal for walking and once the members had completed their walk they were able to enjoy a nice cup of tea and of course, as is a WI tradition, home made cakes.

When everyone had completed their chosen route it was discovered that not only was 100 miles easily achieved but the total covered by the members was an amazing 174 miles.

With the vast majority of the walkers being over 65 the ladies of Bude WI were extremely pleased with their efforts and felt it was great fun and a fitting celebration of 100 years of Bude Women’s Institute.
