AN endurance rider from Callington has rounded off her season in style after clinching victory at one of the sport’s major events.

Victoria Ham and her Arab gelding HS Remy took first place in the two-day, 78km Dragon’s Egg challenge at the British Horsefeeds Red Dragon Festival of Endurance in the Cambrian Mountains.

Competing in the Graded Endurance Ride, the pair tackled a 44km route on the first day before completing a further 34km on day two.

Their consistent performances saw them named Performance Formula winners on both days, with the calculation taking into account the horse’s speed and finishing heart rate to reward fitness and performance.

Victoria, who has competed in endurance riding for 16 years, said the routes provided a memorable challenge.

“This year the 44km route was the best I have ever ridden, a rider’s perfect going,” she said. “The weather was warm, the sun was shining, and we had views for miles.

“The 34km route was a lot more technical, which I really enjoyed as it was different to the day before but still had the beautiful views along the quiet valleys.”

Endurance riding tests horse and rider over long-distance routes, with welfare at the centre of competition.

Horses must undergo veterinary checks before, during and after rides to ensure they are fit and sound to continue.

For Victoria, the victory was particularly special after health challenges had disrupted her season.

She described 10-year-old Remy as talented but sharp, admitting he has “had me off several times” but continues to improve.

“He is certainly the sharpest horse I have ever owned, but he whinnies to me every day and loves a good scratch under his chin,” she said.

Victoria also praised the supportive atmosphere among competitors at the Red Dragon Festival.

She said: “We are all competitive, yet always want a successful day for everyone else.”
