Launceston town mayor, Eric Chapman, recently told the ‘Post’ of his ‘disappointment’ at Launceston not being included within the short list — announced by the Home Office on Monday — of South West communities to benefit from a CCTV initiative to reduce crime. Launceston Town Council have been pushing for CCTV cameras to be installed at points within the town for several years, in a bid to cut crime.
Anna Gregorek from Halwill, graduated from Bournemouth University with a 2:1 Honours in Communications. She is now working in London with Sky Sports.
Budehaven Olde Tyme and Modern Sequence Dance Club, celebrated its Golden Anniversary with a celebration dinner and dance at the Eagle House Hotel, Launceston. Nearly 70 members, former members and friends attended the event.
Every schoolboy knows that it was Alexander Fleming who discovered penicillin. The important part played by Dr Stuart Craddock, a former Holsworthy GP and a leading member of the research team which made the discovery — one of the major events in the history of medicine — is less widely known. A fascinating display at Holsworthy Museum last week sought to rectify this, however.

Police at Holsworthy are searching for thieves who made two seperate journeys to steal ornamental granite mushrooms from the roadside garden of Eden Park, Brandis Corner. A spokesman said they took two of the mushrooms, which each weigh more than 1 cwt at the end of last months, and a further mushroom, last Tuesday. The mushrooms, valued at £75 are part of a set of eight, belonging to Mr W J Knell.
Mrs Joan Jennings, of Kernow Crescent, Bude, received more than £300 worth of camera equipment after winning the March draw of Bude AFC 200 Club. Dave Knight made the draw.
Richard Hallett, of St Teath, was presented with his engineering apprentice certificate recently be the manager of Davidstow’s Dairy Crest Creamery, Michael Jose.
Children from Kilkhampton and Whitstone schools joined together to listen to Althea, the well-known children’s writer, talk to them about her books.

Lynn Beck, a nursing auxiliary at Launceston General Hospital, was chosen as Miss Newmarket and goes through to the Miss Tavern South West 1976 beauty contest final at Plymouth.
Mr R J Burden, of Crackington Haven, a former chairman of the old Stratton Rural Council, is not seeking renomination to the North Cornwall District Council. After 30 years as a councillor he decided that the time had come for him to stand down in favour of someone younger.
The Holsworthy team of Miss G Vanstone, Mrs M Stacey, Mrs D Veale and Mrs M Mill won an inter-divisional quiz of the St John Ambulance Brigade.
Mr G R Finnamore was appointed junior circuit steward at the half-yearly meeting of Launceston Methodist Circuit, Rev F E Mold presiding.
Mac Vidi, the 11-year-old bay gelding owned by Miss Pamela Neal, of ‘Tor Crag’, Camelford, was the winner of the Lingfield Double Star Handicap Chase last Saturday. This is Pamela’s first home-bred horse, from a mare she used to hunt.

Holsworthy Rural Council turned down the Rev J G M Scott’s proposal that councillors’ wives should be appointed to the sub committee to discuss the standard of houses that are to be built throughout the district.
The Launceston College team of Jonathon Rowe (chairman), David du Feu (speaker), and Moira Troy (proposer) won the public speaking competition organised by the international committee of Liskeard and Looe Rotary Club.
After 43 years in the nursing profession Miss E A Linton, of 12 Trecarrell, Launceston, is retiring.

The annual meeting of Launceston Trades Council was held in the Brotherhood Hall on Saturday. It was stated that there were 12 union branches affiliated to the council, involving a total of 800 workers.
In the first stage of Tavistock Rural Council’s slum clearance scheme, 28 buildings, mostly stone built country cottages, have been scheduled for demolition.
The Clarets maintained their position at the head of the P and D League Premier Division as the result of their fine victory at Saltash on Saturday by three goals to four. Scorers were Metters (2), P and T Rickard.

South Petherwin has made local history by electing its first woman member to Launceston Rural Council — Mrs Joan Lennard of Trebursye.
Camelford’s proposals for a Victory celebration have met a mixed reception, and the final decision has been deferred until the next parish council comes into office next month. At Callington the parish council have voted a two and a half pence rate for their celebrations.
Capt J E R Wilson, Devonshire Regiment, of Priory Park, Launceston, has been awarded the MBE, and Cpl Eric N Baker, R Signals, of Holsworthy, has been mentioned in despatches.
After an appeal at Holsworthy Petty Sessions last week, Holsworthy Urban Council were ordered to pay £20 expenses and costs. The case arose from their decision last year to acquire Well Park field as a car park, and though they have since dropped the project, the appellants (Mr R C Barkell, of Derriton, the owner of the field, and Messrs J Parsons and Sons, garage proprietors, Holsworthy) claimed the expenses of the appeal.

Residents of North Tamerton learn with regret that their generous squire, Mr Alexander, is shortly leaving Ogbeare Hall. He has done much for the welfare of the parish and it is largely through him that North Tamerton has such a splendid Victory Hall.
Rev C W Stenson-Stenston, formerly vicar of St Teath, is to go to South Africa as a missionary.

Pick-pockets have been busy in Okehampton. One farmer had a cheque for £89 stolen, an endorsement forged and the cheque cashed; another farmer went to the bank to cash a cheque of £28, found his wallet had gone and discovered that the cheque had already been presented and cashed.
Local membership figures of Women’s Institutes, which were presented at the Cornwall Federation annual meeting held at Launceston, on Tuesday, showed that Lezant has 40 members, South Petherwin 24, Port Isaac 70, St Kew 52, St Tudy 54, Stoke Climsland 67, Tintagel 85, Launceston 177.
