A LOCAL school is hoping to encourage the athletes of tomorrow with the launch of its new ‘Elite Sports Academies’.
The Elite Sports Academies will offer specialised pathways in cricket, girls’ rugby, boys’ rugby, girls’ football, and boys’ football — limited spots of 20 students per academy will ensure personalised coaching. Participating students will benefit from regular strength and conditioning sessions, professional coaching by experts in the field, and a mix of training in core PE lessons, designed to elevate each athlete’s performance.
There will also be an individual athlete academy and a lighter support provision for sports such as athletics, tennis, and swimming, with access to strength and conditioning sessions and help regarding travel and subsidies to attend competitions.
From September 2025, Year 7 students at Launceston College will be able to take part, with the idea being that it will be expanded to other year groups going forward.
The entry criteria stipulates that students must already play at club level in their respective sports.
Matthew Thompson, principal at Launceston College, said: “We’re excited to offer an environment where our students can truly excel. Our new Elite Sports Academies offer will not only provide top-tier coaching but also encourage personal development, discipline, and teamwork. We want to give our athletes the tools to succeed, both in sport and in life.
“I want to say a massive thank you to all the different sports teams that have agreed to spend time working with our students. The coaching they will receive from professional players will undoubtedly be both invaluable and inspiring.”
