SOME of Launceston’s greatest musical talents have been recognised at an award ceremony held in the town.

Residents in Launceston will no doubt know the melodic sound produced by of some of the performers in Launceston Town Band and recently some of the group’s best musicians were recognised at the band’s annual awards ceremony.

Donning their Sunday best, members of the band came together at Launceston Golf Club on February 7, for an evening of celebration, marking musical achievement, dedication and strong sense of community that defines the band.

Alongside the band themself, families, and supporters also gathered to recognise the hard work and commitment shown throughout the year, with awards presented to musicians across all sections of the band. The ceremony highlighted not only individual excellence, but also the teamwork and passion that continue to drive Launceston Town Band forward.

The occasion even had some VIP attendees, including Launceston town councillor and mayor, Cllr Nicola Gilbert. The club has said that the mayor’s attendance serves as a reminder of the important role that music plays in creating community and how the band’s work does exactly that.

A spokesperson from Launceston Town Band said: “The band was honoured to welcome the mayor, Nicola, who attended the event and showed ongoing support for local arts and community organisations. The presence of the mayor was greatly appreciated and served as a reminder of the important role community music plays in bringing people together and enriching life in Launceston.

“Launceston Town Band would like to sincerely thank the mayor for attending, as well as Launceston Golf Club for hosting the event and providing a fantastic venue and food for the evening. Thanks are also extended to Ann Brown MD, all band members, volunteers, and supporters whose contributions make moments like these possible.”

The awards ceremony served as a fitting way to reflect on the band’s achievement over the past year, while also looking ahead with enthusiasm to another year of music, performances, and community engagement.

After the awards were given out and members congratulated for their contribution, families, friends and musicians showed that their talents are not only musical by busting a move on the dance floor as DJ Warren Callan provided the tunes.

However, it isn’t only the group’s players who have received recognition. As well as giving out awards, the band’s much-loved musical director Ann Brown, has also been on the receiving end after being awarded the Ivan Kessel Memorial Trophy at the Festival of Cornish Brass on February 7. The award recognises ‘exemplary work with young banders’, on top of this, Launceston Town Band was also awarded the Eddie Williams rosebowl for growth of player numbers.

A spokesperson from the group concluded: “Please continue to support Launceston Town Band at events which raises funds for new instruments, music and uniform for our growing numbers.
