POLICE were called to reports of a group of men trying to force their way into a Launceston pub.
The incident, on Good Friday (April 3), saw emergency services called to an incident at the White Hart Hotel on Broad Street in the town.
The venue, which has been the subject of an acclaimed overhaul since its purchase by multi-millionaire businessman Harjinder ‘Harry’ Singh Sidhu, released a statement after an anonymous post on a local social media group claimed that the group were ‘allowed in’ to the venue.
It clarified that this was not the case, stating that one of its staff had been assaulted by the ‘gang’, which led to a call to Devon and Cornwall Police.
Devon and Cornwall Police said that a door was damaged in the incident, adding that the gang had left prior to their arrival and that they were still making enquiries as to the nature of the incident.
A spokesperson for the White Hart Hotel said: “Over the past year, since taking over, our team has worked tirelessly to rebuild The White Hart into a safe, welcoming, and enjoyable place for everyone in our community.
“We are incredibly proud of the reputation we’ve earned — as a venue for great food, a popular carvery, friendly service, and an atmosphere that suits all, from a quiet coffee in the lounge to a lively evening in the bar.
“Like many venues, we occasionally face challenging situations. Recently, a group causing serious disruption across the town attempted to enter our premises. They were refused entry, and we took immediate action to protect our staff and customers.
“Unfortunately, this led to incidents outside the venue, including damage to our property and an assault on a member of our team — at which point the police were called.
“We want to be absolutely clear that these individuals were not inside The White Hart, they were refused entry, and we will always stand firm in protecting our team and guests.
“It is therefore extremely disappointing to see false claims suggesting that violence is taking place “in” our venue. This is simply untrue and misrepresents the situation entirely.
“We are incredibly proud of how our staff handled a difficult and potentially dangerous situation with professionalism and courage. Their safety, and the safety of our patrons, will always be our top priority.
“However, we will always defend our team, our reputation, and the truth. and we remain focused on continuing to provide the best possible experience for those who choose to visit us.
“To our loyal customers — thank you. Your continued support, kind words, and presence mean everything to us.”
A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: “We were called at 10.25pm on Friday, April 3, following a report of a group trying to gain entry to a licenced premises in Broad Street, Launceston, following an earlier altercation.
“It was reported the men had assaulted numerous people in the pub and damaged a door prior in the evening. Officers attended but the suspects had left. Enquiries are ongoing.”
