STUDENTS in Launceston have been getting an insight into the world of work thanks to a school initiative.
Year 8 students from Launceston College gained valuable real-world experience as they took part in ‘Take Your Child to Work Week’.
Accompanied by their parents and carers, students ventured into a wide range of workplaces, from ice cream production and cyber security to frontline emergency services and local businesses, giving them a first-hand look inside a variety of different industries and career paths which are available to them.
Launceston College says that initiatives like this help students build confidence, explore future ambitions, and develop practical skills beyond the classroom.
Among those taking part was Tommy, who had some very exciting experiences as he spent the day at Launceston Fire Station, learning about the vital role firefighters play in the community.
The college thanked parents and employers who helped make the week a success, inspiring students and giving them a hands-on introduction to the world of work.
Mr Matthew Thompson, principal at Launceston College, said: “Take Your Child to Work Week gives our students a real insight into the world of work and the skills they’ll need in the future. Hearing about their different experiences has been inspiring, and it’s just one part of the careers guidance and support we provide all year to help students make confident choices about their futures.”
A spokesperson from Athena Learning Trust added: “Take Your Child to Work Week forms part of Launceston College’s broader careers programme. Through tutor-led sessions, role-play activities, and the Character Curriculum, students explore real-life issues linked to employment, financial decision-making, wellbeing, and responsibility. They are encouraged to assess their own skills, understand local training and employment opportunities, and develop the confidence and employability skills needed for future success.”
