A RESIDENT of Launceston is taking it upon himself to keep the town looking pristine as he cleans up some of the area’s roads and paths.

Jeremy Vernon has been playing his part in keeping Launceston looking its best by carrying out tidying works throughout some of the town’s walking routes.

After seeing the sorry state that some of the pathways found themselves in, Jeremy said that he “felt a need” to carry out renovations to improve their conditions.

Speaking to the Post, he said: “I've been taking my partner's dog out for a walk and noticing that the pathways are a bit of a mess and thought I would just start tidying it up.”

From tidying up grass verges to clearing hedges, Jeremy has been getting stuck in to make sure some of Launceston’s forgotten paths receive the love they deserve.

So far, Jeremy has tackled a number of spaces from Station Road to Cross Lanes.

He explained: “I had a go on Station Road, but that’s not completely finished, there’s still some more that needs cutting back.

“I did a pathway at the end of Cross Lanes, I uncovered the edge stones and cleaned the path up and I thought that if I’m going to go to the effort of doing it, I should post about it locally and there seems to be quite a lot of responses to everything I’m posting.”

Jeremy started carrying out this work when he lived in Wiltshire. Now, after moving back to Cornwall, he decided to continue this work.

The maintenance is carried out in his own time and with his own tools, though he said the time it takes varies on the size of the project.

He explained: “The time these jobs take varies depending on how overgrown it is. I’ve done almost half a kilometre at Liftondown and I would say that took around 12 to 15 hours of work in total. But that was really overgrown.”

Despite being a lot of work, Jeremy has said the positive responses he gets from the community have spurred him on.

“They’re pretty much all positive, apart from the ones which are slating Cornwall Council for their lack of maintenance,” he said.

However, Jeremy is now having to take a break from clearing pathways, while he awaits permission from Cornwall Council to carry out the improvements.

Despite this, he continues to hold immense pride in his work, with one job taking the top spot.

“I think the work I am most proud of was some I did in Wiltshire. There was around 400 metres of pathway which was overgrown which I decided to tackle. However along the end of the stretch was a destroyed bench which I decided to repair and rebuild.”

Now, as he awaits news that he is able to continue his work, Jeremy is considering a number of spots around Launceston that he could give a bit of love and freshen up for the community.
