SOME of North Cornwall’s budding cricketers are set to improve their game alongside some of the county’s best.

Four talented students from Launceston College have been selected for the Cornwall Winter Cricket Programme.

While England battles for the Ashes Down Under, future prospects Henry, Will, Vivaan and Theo will be training with other leading young players from across Cornwall. The winter programme focuses on skills, match awareness and fitness in the off-season.

Run by Cornwall Cricket, selection for the winter coaching programme takes place following trials that take place in the Autumn. Nominations for these trials is an open process and can come via from schools, clubs and parents.

Henry, Will, Vivaan and Theo’s achievement comes as the college’s Elite Sports Academies continue to attract strong interest from families across the region. The academies support committed athletes in rugby, football, cricket and a range of individual sports.

Students receive expert coaching, weekly training, strength and conditioning sessions and chances to visit professional clubs. The college works with the Cornish Pirates and coaches from Plymouth Argyle to give students access to high-level coaching and facilities.

Applications remain open for all academy programmes. These include rugby, football and cricket, along with the Individual Athlete Academy, which covers sports such as athletics, tennis and swimming. All applicants must already play at club level.

Mr Matthew Thompson, principal at Launceston College, said: “Launceston has some very talented young athletes, and we want to give them every chance to succeed. The four boys have been putting in the hard work, so it’s great to see their dedication recognised at county level. Now they have the chance to test themselves against some of the best young players in Cornwall, and I’m excited to see how they progress.”
