CHILSWORTHY Village Hall was a hive of activity last Saturday as people swarmed to Devon's biggest beekeeping convention.

Beekeeping enthusiasts and members of the public turned out for the annual spring convention held by the Holsworthy branch of Devon Beekeepers Association.

The event, now in its seventh year, is believed to be the biggest one in Devon and was declared a success by branch Chairman Andrew Sluggett.

"It was very good and well attended. We had some fantastic speakers," he said.

A full and varied programme captured the interest of those who attended. Speakers included Professor Michael Keith-Lucas. He gave a fascinating talk about the use of pollen in forensic science.

Regional Bee Inspector, Adam Vevers kicked off the event with updates on current beekeeping and use of pesticides.

Dr Juliet Osborne and Dr Peter Kennedy of Rothamsted Research gave insights into their work about Honeybee and Bumblebee Ecology and Pollination and food and health, their interacting effects on honey bees.
