666 New Season Lambs, 165 Draft Ewes and Rams
The lamb trade nationally has taken a drop and our trade was in line with the rest of the country. Overall average of 310ppk. The young sappy lambs sold to a top of 320ppk for a pen of Charollais x 41kgs £131 from Sam Vickery, Killock, Kilhampton.
Followed by two vendors at 318ppk from Rob Harris, Putford 44kgs £140 and Sarah Cleave, Kilkhampton 43.2kgs £137.50. Several pens £140 to a top of £141 for four pens of 45kgs from J Littlejohns & Son, Shears, Morwenstow.
Draft Ewes
Larger entry and a flying trade from start to finish. Overall average of £159. Top on the day was £223 for Suffolk x and Texel x ewes sold by Richard Metherell, Moortown, Torrington.
Lawrence Wickett, Bradworthy realised £219 for his Suffolk x ewes and four other vendors at £195 to £200. Mules to £180 from M J Ashton & Partners, Parkham. Polled Dorset ewes to £178.
Couples
Smaller entry and a strong trade. Bradworthy YFC topped the Doubles at £440 and Singles at £320.
448 Calves
Weaned Calves
A big show and a wonderful trade, TWB Hookway & Partners of Roborough had an incredible run of weaned Limousins which sold to a mega £990 (3-4m) for their first bunch of steers with more bunches to £930 (3-4m) looking a sensational trade.
A well farmed Simmental steer made £930 (6m) in from GG Smale & Son, Launceston followed by young, fresh Blue steers at £840 for Colwill & Bellairs, Morwenstow and Angus steers to £840 for a bunch in from James Warren up from Penzance. Hereford heifers soared up to £790 for a sweet pair in from Holland Partnership down from Warkleigh followed by Blue heifers to £795 (6m) in from James Warren again.
Sweet, 4 month old Limousin heifers to £780 for TWB Hookway & Sons again, with further Limousin heifers to £750 (6m) in from Geoff Pomeroy of Bradworthy. Weaned Friesians saw plenty of trade and reached £500 for GG Smale, a pair at £495 for TWB Hookway and a run at £490 for Luxton of Petrockstowe.
Milk Calves
After weeks of seeing young fresh rearing calves sell to huge highs we have seen a steadier trade today with the smaller continental and native calves £100 less on previous weeks as shown in today’s averages.
Having said that we saw a strong trade for the heavy, month old plus sorts and have had many rearing calves over £900 to a top of £940 for an A1 Charolais bull in from Martin Dairy LTD, St Mabyn who sold other storming sorts to £930, £860 and £840. Further Charolais to £905 (1m) for a pure bred in from DR Stacey up from Bugle. 21 Charolais bulls average at £738.
Smart, slightly older Blue bulls to £900 for Andrew Oke, Bradford others £830 and £820 WJ Hobbs and Sons, Morwentsow, more to £800 Chris Marshall, Rock, £730 ME & IE Vanstone, Woolsery, £710 LJ Goaman & Sons and £708 for Tony Dallyn down from Barnstaple. Best Limousin bulls to £820 presented by Andrew Oke of Bradford who had another at £780.
Older Hereford bulls to £880 Andrew Oke, younger sorts to £580 T Dallyn and £525 for TJ Daniel, Sutcombe. Strong Angus sold to £680 for Colwill & Bellairs, Morwenstow, more to £670 for ME and IE Vanstone and £670 for Dan Chamberlain, Shebbear, 31 Angus bulls average £375 being £50 less on the week.
Again, very smart Simmental bulls to £725 for the Wearing family up from Tavistock and £588 for DW & SC Gillbard down from Black Dog. Heifers reached a massive £820 for a very well put together Blue in from A Oke, other smart types to £790 for WJ Hobbs, and £760 for LJ Goaman & Sons with those smaller Blue heifers seeing less interest today and would be £40 back.
A smashing pair of Hereford heifers up to £780 with more to £580 for Morton Pound Farm LTD. A smashing run of Charolais heifers in from Martin Dairy reached a mega £755 with more to £750, £725 and £700 with 13 averaging £620 with plenty of small ones in the mix. Smaller, younger mix bred native heifers trading between £300-£400.
Dairy Sired Bulls
A good offering of dairy bulls which sold well considering we have a harder trade on the small types. 32 Friesian bulls average £202. Brown Swiss bulls sold well to £310 in from Rachael Poole, Milton Damerel.
250 Store Cattle
An excellent entry for the time of year saw trade no easier, with another large crowd of buyers in attendance. Forward cattle may have lost its edge slightly but still strong against the decreasing finished price.
Top on the day was £2230 for a 16mth Simmental steer from Mr FR Bown, Northlew, who sold others at £2020. Several good stronger feeding cattle hit a top of £2190 for a shapely 20mth British Blue from Messrs EA Maile & Son, Sampford Courtenay. Other British Blues from Messrs ACG Marshall, Holsworthy £2180 (x3). Messrs NT, AW & MT Gear, Newton Tracey £2090 (x2), others £2080 and £2070.
A 25mth framed British Blue from Mr PH Reed, Milton Damerel £2070 and £2070. A good run of well fleshed Fleckvieh steers from Messrs NT, AW & MT Gear, Newton Tracey topped at £2000 (x3). Younger 16mth Fleckvieh steers from Duchy College topped at £1900, others £1680. Few Natives with a top call of £2070 for a Hereford from Messrs NT, AE & MT Gear, Newton Tracey. Aberdeen Angus to £1950 for two 18mth steers from Duchy College.
Younger Store Cattle
Messrs DE & AM Olde, Morwenstow topped at £1670 for a well farmed British Blue. Other 14mth British Blues from Mr A Walter, Stratton topped at £1470 (x5), £1460 (x4) and £1430 for a British Blue from Mr RG Stevens, Hartland. Others £1400 and £1300.
Similar aged 14mth British Blue heifers in demand with fifteen from Mr A Walter, Stratton selling well at £1480. Younger 7-9mth Continentals sold well with six 8mth British Blues from Messrs R Wood & Partners, Holsworthy £1300 (x6).
Other young British Blues 7mths from Messrs TJ Boughton & Son, Bradworthy £1180 and heifers 9mths from Messrs DE & AM Olde, Hartland sold well at £1120 (x5). Best of the Natives to £1580 for a 11mth Hereford from Messrs CR & CF Timms & Son, Inwardleigh, who sold five others 10mths £1400.
Younger 7mth Aberdeen Angus steers from Messrs TJ Boughton & Son, Braworthy £1110 (x4). Aberdeen Angus heifers 8mths from Mr P Thompson, Exeter raced away to £1080 (x3).
OTM Weighing Cows
250ppk was the top for a lightweight Friesian cow from Moreton Pound Ltd, Launcells £1515.
121 Dairy Cattle
A super entry of Dairy Cattle sold to an easier trade on the whole although overall quality wouldn’t have been as good as previous weeks.
Top of the day was £3000 for a super second calver “Willsbro Mooie Roxy 4130 ET” from Messrs Wills Bros Ltd of Wadebridge who sold a super consignment of milkers. Close behind from the same home at £2700 was “Willsbro Dreambig Amber 3731 VG85” a heifer due her second in July.
Other fresh Heifers from Willsbro sold to £2650, £2600 x 2 and £2500 was achieved five times. Other fresh Cows sold to £2600 for “Glendene Bertha 145” a second calver from Messrs Burrow & Sons of Woolacombe.
Other fresh Heifers to £2600, £2500 x 2 & £2450 for Mewsrs WJA, SJ & A Hain of Redruth and £2550 for a sweet red heifer from Gareth Hutchings of Launceston. In Calf Heifers due in the Autumn saw an excellent trade topping at £2200 four times for JA & RS Mills of Torrington who sold others to £2150, £2050 x 5 and £2000 x 3 to average £2005.
A super consignment of late autumn born calves from Willsbro sold to a cracking trade topping at £2500 for “Willsbro Dropbox Chana 6759” from the Cosmopolitan family, she sold backed by 10 generations of VG or Ex dams to the Walkabout herd. Next best was £1800 for “Willsbro Hulu Rozelle 6739” by Siemers Wolf Hulu.
Two more calves made £1700 from the O’Kalobre and Roxy families with plenty between £1200-£1500 to average £1327 for 34 calves. A Purebred Hereford bull sold well at £2200 for I Pedrick of Kingsbridge and two pure Limousin bulls to £2400 x 2 for Andrew Cleave of Christow.
