310 New Season Lambs, 106 Draft Ewes and Rams

Larger entry of new season lambs met a firm trade with the young sappy tight skinned lambs topping at 378ppk for two pens of 41kgs £155 from Sam Vickery, Killock, Kilkhampton.

376ppk was realised by Geoffrey & Simon Grigg, Weach Barton, Bideford for a pen of 41.4kgs £155.50. The Stephen Family, Burscott, Holsworthy saw their two pens of 40.2kgs make 368ppk £148. Top per head on the day was £157 for three pens of 43kgs from Geoffrey & Simon Grigg, Weach Barton, Bideford.

276 Hoggs

They still keep on coming and they met a steady trade. Top per kilo being 304ppk for a pen of 42.4kgs from Mike Woodley, Burracott, Bude. Top per head being £158 from Chant Bros, Bradworthy.

Draft Ewes

A very fast trade and a lot more could have been sold. Charollais x ewes to £199 from Tom Nancekivell, Heatham, Kilkhampton. Texel x ewes to £194 from Chris & Sally Prouse, Court Barn, Clawton. Several pens of Suffolks £180 and over to a top of £191 from Messrs Pearce, Church Stile, Winkleigh. Mules to £180. Polled Dorsets to £168.

Couples 66E and 111L

A firm trade for all couples with the new show couples seeing Doubles top at £310 from three vendors. Singles to £280 for Suffolk x hogg Singles from Henry Banbury, Iddesleigh.

371 Calves

Weaned Calves

A nice consignment of dairy bred British Blues and Aberdeen Angus all in from J Blyth, Okehampton which reached £910 for his first pen of British Blue steers (6m), Aberdeen Angus steers to £840 (6-7m) with both his Aberdeen Angus and British Blue heifers racing away to £800 (6m).

Milk Calves

An unbelievable trade even with less buyers ring side.

DA N & JM Parkhouse presented a wonderful run of 8-12 week old calves with their best British Blue bulls reaching a mammoth £920 with others selling extremely well at £915 x9 and others to £770 further British Blue bulls being younger this time at £732 for JL & GL Tallamy & Sons, Bradworthy other young sorts to £722 for TJ Boughton & Sons, Bradworthy, £708 I Marshall, Rock, £705, WA Raffe & Sons, Bradworthy and £705 also for V & M Brown, Buckland Brewer, with 27 British Blue bulls over £700.

One of the best Simmental bulls ever seen in Holsworthy soared away to £830 for RG & LA & SR Wearing up from Tavistock with another to £770 for DW & GN Renfree, Liskeard. Martin Dairy Limited back in again from St Mabyn with an eye catching run of Charolais bulls which sold to a grand £805, £765, £732 other very young Charolais bulls to £665 for Ruth Bucknell travelling down from Tiverton further young types to £625 Robert Harris & Family, Winkleigh.

Aberdeen Angus bulls a phenomenal trade reaching £755 for the Parkhouse Family again others to £720 M Holden of Kilkhampton, with pen after pen of decent Aberdeen Angus bulls trading between £460 and £600. Hereford bulls to another blistering trade reaching £755 and £690 (x2) for the Parkhouse’s, younger sorts to £585 for Andrew Oke and Family and £540 for RWH Dilling, Beaworthy.

A beautiful Limousin bull to £715 for AJ & PE Nancekivell, Kilkhampton who had another cracker at £610. Rosemary Charman presented a nice run of young fresh Limousin bulls which attained £570 and £510. Welsh Black bulls to £530 in from WD Medland, Whitstone followed by a lovely red Devon bull to £500 in from AA Vanstone, Shebbear.

Heifers very much in demand as we see every week with best British Blue heifers to £770 (10 weeks) for a bunch in from DA N & JM Parkhouse again who had others to £670 and £640 further British Blue heifers to £700 for TJ & BE Cowley & Son, Ashwater, £670 for V & M Brown and £650 for K & L Care, St Austell with heaps of British Blue heifers over £500, Limousin heifers to £700 for M Holden, £670 DW & GM Renfree, £620 AJ & PE Nancekivell and £610 for the Wearing Family.

Simmental heifers to £620 for RWH Dilling. Charolais heifers followed suit at £620 and £570 for Martin Dairy Limited. Aberdeen Angus heifers to £620 for Huntshaw Farm Partnership, Torrington more to £545 for WD Medland, with 28 Aberdeen Angus heifers averaging £355. Young fresh Hereford heifers to £570 Andrew Oke who had another at £485.

Dairy Sired Bulls

Friesian bulls to £410 for DA N & JM Parkhouse, who had others at £320 (x2), with 44 Friesian bulls average the same as last week at £159. Montbéliard heifers to £395 for JR Frayne, Launceston.

210 Store Cattle

The stronger meat cattle were in short supply but sold to a strong trade despite the finished price easing. Top call this week was £2300 for an 18mth British Blue steer from Messrs CT Banbury & Sons, Broadwood.

Other meat British Blues from Mr PH Reed, Milton Damerel sold well at £2300 (x4) with plenty of other British Blues £2000+. Top call for the Charolais was £2200 again from Messrs CT Banbury & Sons, Broadwood, who sold others to £2160 and also topped the Limousins with a 17mth steer £2090.

Younger Stores

A mixed bag of younger cattle this week saw a run of well fed 12-13mth cattle from Mr J Bryant, Parracombe saw Aberdeen Angus steers hit £1790, British Blue heifers £1430 and Limousin heifers £1420. A nice run of 8mth British Blue steers from Messrs R Wood & Partners, Thornbury. Raced away to £1320. Other young British Blues from Messrs DE & AM Olde, Morwenstow £1240 and £1100.

Single suckled Charolais heifers from Messrs AT & DE King & Partners, Winkleigh £1350 (x4). Several harder 8-12mth Hereford and Aberdeen Angus sold extremely well. A run from Diepenbroek Farms Ltd, Seaton saw Hereford steers top at £1280, heifers £900 (x7). Young 5-7mths British Blue x steers from Messrs Ashton & Sons, Petersmarland to £810, 5mth heifers to £660 (x6).

Finished Cattle

Top this week was 340ppk for a 776 kilo steer from Messrs G & N Cook, Buckland Brewer realising £2638.

89 Dairy Cattle

With most of the silaging and maize drilling completed more buyers were present around the ring with a much-improved trade. Topping the fresh milk at £2,800 (2) were ‘Winkleigh Top Norma 3’ & ‘Winkleigh Dsam Lavender’ both sold on behalf of Winkeligh Holsteins and yielding 35kgs.

Close behind, achieving £2,750 was the heifer ‘Westtown Cinderella 28’ sold on behalf of Steve Davey & Partners, yielding 29kg. This same vendor also sold ‘Westtown Smokey 34’ a second calver yielding 35kg. The market fresh milk averaged £2,460 across the board.

Willsbro Holsteins sold a quality consignment of pedigree Holstein cattle. Topping the freshly calved spring calvers was ‘Willsbro Hashmark Edda 5098’ who achieved £3,400 and sold yielding 46kg. A further three sold to £3,300 - ‘Willsbro Hardy Roxy 5221’ a smart heifer with 9 generations of straight EX behind it, sold yielding 38kg.

‘Willsbro Hardy Roxy 5220’ a heifer with 10 generations of VG/EX yielding 39kg and ‘Willsbro Dropbox Mariah 5197’, another heifer with 12 generations VG/EX behind her and sold yielding 48kg. The spring calvers averaged £2,945. The in-calf summer calving portion, all due to calve in July, topped the sale at £3,600 with ‘Willsbro Duplo Delight VG85 SP2’ who is due to calve 30th July to Quarry Bank Moneyman (BB).

This superb young black cow with a very correct udder was the top price animal of the day. Other notable cows were ‘Willsbro Soren Rozelle 3662 VG85’ and ‘Overside Yoda Amanda EX90 SP’ both achieving £3,000. This consignment of staler milking cows very close to drying off sold to a firm trade.

The in-calf summer calving portion averaged £2,645. The September 2024 born heifers met a fantastic trade topping at £1,900 for ‘Willsbro Pace Adina 6726’ a superb, black sleek-coated stylish calf sired by Siemers Cway Pace and with 13 generations of VG/EX behind her.

‘Willsbro Pace Roxy 6721’ and ‘Willsbro Pace Rae 6734’ both not far behind, achieving £1,700. This group of extremely well reared heifers for their age averaged £1,440. An outstanding 3-year-old, pedigree, polled Hereford Bull sold to £3,300 on behalf of Messrs Chamberlain of Shebbear.
