RESIDENTS in North Cornwall are set to ‘walk the walk’ to raise money for a life-saving charity.
The community of Week St Mary is set to strut its stuff as it attempts to take on as many marathons as possible to raise money for vital breast cancer research.
The event, hosted by the Bonaventures WI and set to take place on September 6, will welcome walkers to the village playing field where they will set off on their two hour wander hoping to tackle as many loops around the one mile route as possible during the time.
A spokesperson from the event said: “Let’s all get together as a community and walk for all those we have sadly lost in the past, for those who are going through a cancer journey in the present and in the hope of finding a cure for all those in the future.”
The event, which has been named ‘Week Wander’, is in aid of Walk the Walk, the UK's largest grant-making breast cancer charity and has raised over £137-million through its power walking events. Now locals are set to add to that total
The spokesperson continued: “Everyone is welcome, men and women of all ages, accompanied children, friends and family. Form a relay team, walk as a group, come on your mobility scooter or bring your four legged friends.
“Following the successful Moonwalk Marathon last year, Sandy gave a talk to the Bonaventures WI about her experience. From that talk, it was evident that many people would like to do a charity walk but don’t feel able to tackle a marathon. And so the idea for the first ‘WEEK WANDER’ was born - a fun community charity walk, organised by the WI, for the community.
“As well as fundraising for this amazing charity, this fun walk will hopefully encourage everyone - young or old - to improve their individual fitness, whether that means walking 200 yards or a mile, which is fundamental to improved overall health.”
The route will be marshalled to ensure the safety of all participants and all children under 12 need to be accompanied by an adult. There will also be an adapted route for dog walkers.
As well as fundraising, the event is also collecting donations of old bras for Smalls for All. The charity collects underwear for people in Africa and the UK who can’t afford or can’t get any.
The spokesperson added: “And ladies, please have a rifle through your undies drawer as on the day we will be accepting bra donations which will be sent to Africa via ‘Smalls For All’.”
Payments on the day can be made in cash, with a minimum sponsorships fee of £5 for adults and £1 for children under the age of 16.
The spokesperson concluded: “We would really appreciate any extra sponsorship or donations above and beyond the suggested minimum. Please ask your family and friends to sponsor you so that we can smash our target of £1,000!”
