TO COMMEMORATE the Battle of Waterloo, as it approaches its 200th anniversary on June 18, the residents of Waterloo Road, Holsworthy, together with the local community, have created Waterloo 200 — an old fashioned country fair and family fun day.

The battle took place on June 18, 1815, near Waterloo in present-day Belgium, then part of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. It was a historic occasion that is said to have changed the face of Europe, as the Duke of Wellington defeated Napoleon Bonaparte.

The country fair and family fun day will be held at Rifleman's Barn, Waterloo Road, on Sunday, June 21 between 11am and 4pm.

Throughout the day there will be a range of traditional activities, stalls and entertainment for the whole family, including birds of prey, dog and pony agility, family dog show and dog races, a special Father's Day race, Punch and Judy, tug-o-war, model railway, classic cars, carriage driving, spinning, weaving and wood turning demonstrations, games and children's races, bicycle jousting and a best decorated welly parade.

Music will be provided by Holsworthy Town Band as well as folk and country band Rushwood & Co, and there will be a hog roast, curry stall, beer tent, Farmer Tom's ice-cream and other refreshments.

Admission to Waterloo 200 is free and there will be plenty of car parking spaces available. There will however be a '50p a go' charge for activities such as apple bobbing, splat the rat and the coconut shy, best dressed welly competition and ping the welly.

All proceeds will be donated to Devon Air Ambulance.
