COASTGUARDS based in Padstow attended reports of objects with lights flashing in the sea off of Harlyn Bay.

The incident, which took place late in to the evening on July 31, transpired to be a fishing marker buoy.

While the incident was not one involving danger, HM Coastguard Padstow say that even where it transpires that there is no danger, they would prefer that people continue to contact them if they see something of concern as they would ‘rather investigate and confirm that no danger is present’.

After investigating the reports of two objects floating with a flashing light approximately 15 metres off of Harlyn Bay and talking to the first informant who alerted coastguard to the presence of the items, it was confirmed by HM Coastguard Padstow to be a fishing marker buoy with a light on. It is believed that the light detached from its original location and then washed in shore.

After it was established that there was no danger, coastguards were stood down and later returned back to their homes.

A spokesperson for HM Coastguard Padstow thanked the members of the public who reported the incident for their vigilance, adding: “Tasking to investigate reports of two objects floating with a light flashing around 15 meters off Harlyn beach.

“Team members met with the first informant and inspected the item. They confirmed that it was a fishing marker buoy, with a light on. It must have detached from its original location and washed in shore. Thank you to the members of public for their vigilance and for reporting this.

“We would much rather investigate and confirm that no danger is present. As soon as it was established that all was well, the team was stood down and returned to their homes.
