A FORMER Budehaven Student and his wife are due to feature in a one-hour prime time TV catch up special this Sunday on Channel 5.

It’s now nearly 12 months on from when Paul Bate, a former pupil of Budehaven School, and his wife Katy Jobbins, founder and head trainer at ‘Permanent Makeup Training Academy’ now based in West Sussex, appeared in the final episode of series six of Channel 5’s popular inspirational life swap documentary, ‘Rich House, Poor House’ titled ‘Laboutins & 20K in Debt.’

People got to see Paul and Katy along with their three young children, swap lives with single mother, Nadine, who had a very similar background to Katy, a part-time hairdresser on benefits from Portsmouth.

During the episode, which was aired just a few weeks into the UK’s total COVID-19 lockdown, viewers saw how Katy successfully managed a very tight budget of just £86 to last the week, even managing to squeeze in a date night including a bottle of bubbly for good measure.

At the end of the episode, Katy offered to train a very emotional Nadine in permanent makeup for free. She also offered to give her a full permanent makeup kit and enough stock for her first 50 clients. Paul, a marketing expert, also offered to help mentor her to set up and run her own permanent makeup business.

Katy began training Nadine in March, however, with one day of her course to go, the UK was put into an immediate lockdown situation and her course had to be cut short.

Although Nadine was not able to get off to the flying start she had hoped for, during the following months of lockdown, Katy and Nadine were in almost constant daily contact.

It was not until mid-August 2020 that close contact services such as permanent makeup could resume only to stop again in December. However with treatments to start again this month nearly one year on from the airing of the show did Nadine manage to set up her own permanent makeup clinic and start a new career that could potentially change her life? Yes she did.

So much so, that Channel 5 commissioned Emporium Productions, to produce an hour long special follow up show called, ‘Rich House, Poor House Changed My Life.’

Channel 5 have never before shown a one hour catch up special featuring just one family swap before.

In the follow up episode viewers will see Katy travelling to Portsmouth to meet Nadine at her very own newly opened permanent makeup clinic where she now earns around £250 per hour for her specialist skills as a permanent makeup artist.

Nadine was so inspired by her mentor Katy offering free treatments to cancer patients, that she too, now holds a free clinic once a month for cancer patients to come in whilst undergoing chemotherapy. This is Nadine’s way of giving back for her good fortune and to pay it forward by helping others that may be struggling with their self esteem and body image in the darkest hour of their lives.

Their relationship has now developed into a friendship, and on the show the two women share stories of how the swap has changed both of their lives over the last 12 months, along with how they have coped during lockdown.

The show will be dedicated to one of Katy’s clients who had been diagnosed with cancer, Della ‘Ferrari’ Lamden, who sadly lost her battle with cancer in October last year. Della had featured on the original show, meeting up with Nadine explaining how Katy performs areola reconstruction treatments on breast cancer patients for free as her way of giving back.

Proud husband Paul told the Post: “I’m so proud of my wife Katy for all the hard work she has put in over the last 15 years, helping shape the industry and raise standards at the same time.

I have never known anyone so determined to work on both herself and help others reach their own full potential.

“She is a true inspiration to all that meet her and despite her very down to earth view of the world, is still never really able to accept the praise that comes her way as a result of all the people she has helped change their lives over the years.  But this I guess is why so many people love her so much and why she has had literally thousands of amazing messages from people around the world who watched the show last year.

“It also goes to show how anyone with the right guidance, training and support can completely turn their life around, no matter what your background.”

Katy and Nadine’s new one hour special ‘Rich House, Poor House Changed My Life’ to be aired at 9pm on Channel 5 on Sunday, April 18.
