THE members of Launceston Camera Club were delighted to discover they had won the club section of the Amateur Photographer of the Year APOY 2022 competition for a second year running.

This annual competition, held by Amateur Photographer Magazine, is run over ten months, with each month involving a different theme, ranging from portraits to travel and black and white to action.

Open to all amateur photographers, it is also split into three categories with an individual winner, adult and junior, and a winning club.

Each monthly entry is professionally judged, short listed images earning 10 points, with the top 10 gaining additional points.

Points are then accumulated throughout the year to find the winner.

The individual senior winner receives a £1,000 award, the junior winner £500, with the winning club receiving £1,000.

Launceston Camera Club triumphed again this year with a total of 510 points, 170 points ahead of Kempsey Camera Club, who came second.

Commenting on the result, club chairman Geoff Trevarthen said: “Over 85 clubs entered the competition this year and we are so proud to have achieved such a fantastic result twice running.

“The key to our success was encouraging two thirds of our members to enter their favourite rounds and as a result, we had shortlisted photos in every round, with 19 members accumulating 41 shortlisted photos in total.

“Of note are our two top 10 winners, Pedro Landers who came third in the black and white round, Nigel Watson who came tenth in the Best of British round and Chris Robbins who achieved no less than six shortlisted photos”.

A spokesperson for the awards said: “If the name looks familiar, it’s because Launceston Camera Club also walked away with our camera club prize last year. Building on their strength, they persuaded 19 members to enter this time round – four more than in 2021, and scored a highly impressive 510 points, which is 20 up on last year. Their enthusiasm for the competition saw them take the lead early on. The question is, who will beat them next year?”

Nigel Atherton added: ‘Will any other clubs step up and give Launceston a run for their money next year?’
