IT was a vibrant St Piran’s Day in Bude, as the community came together to celebrate all things Cornish.
Each year, Cornwall’s population take a moment to celebrate all the things that make the Duchy great, from its people and produce to its rich history — and this was exactly the case in Bude.
Hosted by Bude-Stratton Town Council, residents gathered on Summerleaze Downs on Thursday, March 5 to celebrate and honour Cornwall’s patron saint for St Piran’s Day.
Despite the grey Cornish weather, crowds came out in force, and the day’s events have been branded a ‘huge success’ after local school children from Budehaven Community School, Bude Primary Academy – Juniors, Bude Primary Academy - Infants and The 2 Minute Foundation’s home educated group led the crowds in a rousing rendition of both Cornwall My Home and Trelawny.
As well as students, local singers and musicians, including Jaqi Heard, Jonathan Ball, and Robin Bale, also helped guide the songs, creating a joyful atmosphere.
Ian Saltern, deputy town clerk for Bude-Stratton Town Council, was responsible for organising the town’s celebrations. Following the event, he praised the ‘energy and enthusiasm’ which was brought to the event by all of those who attended.
"It was amazing to see so many young people taking part," he said. "Their energy and enthusiasm really brought the celebrations to life and reminded us all why St Piran’s Day is so special to Cornwall."
Throughout the morning’s events, residents and visitors of all ages joined the festivities, enjoying the music and Cornish songs. The event was praised for shining a light on the community spirit which runs through the town.
Following the special Cornish occasion, a spokesperson from Bude-Stratton Town Council said: “The town council extends its thanks to everyone who attended and took part in the celebration.”
