A LEISURE centre in Launceston has confirmed the reason for its sudden closure.

Yesterday (March 9), Launceston Leisure announced that it was having to close suddenly due to ‘health and safety’ reasons, leading to local speculation as to the reason behind the decision. Today (March 10), the centre has announced that the site will remain closed for the day.

Following speculation, the centre released a message to its members, confirming that the site’s fire alarm system failed its recent service inspection. On top of this, the leisure centre has confirmed that it is addressing an issue with the showers in the ladies’ changing area.

In a message to members, a spokesperson from Launceston Leisure saidL: “We regret to inform you that the leisure centre is temporarily closed following our fire alarm system failing its recent service inspection. As the safety of our members, staff, and visitors is our highest priority, we have taken the precautionary decision to close the facility while this issue is resolved.

“At the same time, we are also addressing an issue with the showers in the ladies’ changing area. Replacement units have already been ordered, and we are currently awaiting our plumber to attend site to complete the installation.”

The centre has said that its teams are working to ‘resolve both matters as quickly as possible’.

The spokesperson continued: “Please be assured that we are working behind the scenes with our contractors to resolve both matters as quickly as possible and to ensure everything meets the required safety and operational standards before reopening.

“We understand that this may cause inconvenience and sincerely apologise for the disruption to your usual activities. Our team is doing everything possible to minimise the closure period, and we will keep you updated with further information as soon as we have a confirmed reopening date.”
