THE Bude community came out in force this week to pay their respects and remember the fallen as part of the town’s Remembrance ceremony.
Residents came together to line the streets on November 9, to reflect on those who have given their lives to protect our country and our freedoms.
Each year, the Bude-Stratton community, local councillors and Cornwall councillors come together at the Shalder Hill War Memorial to lay wreathes and pay their respect.
This year’s Remembrance was made even more special thanks to the introduction of metal poppies
The initiative, led by Luke Francis, with all proceeds going to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, gave residents the chance to purchase a metal poppy to either place at the War Memorial or keep at home as a lasting tribute. Each poppy could be personalised with the names of family members, friends, or others they wish to remember.
The idea came from Mr Francis, head postmaster of Bude and a long-standing Royal British Legion Standard Bearer and Parade Marshall. Inspired by the display of metal poppies at the Tower of London, he approached Greenfield Engineering to manufacture and paint the poppies in three different colours, making the project a reality.
Alongside a number of local groups, Fiona Hargreaves laid a wreath on behalf of the King, Tanky Williams chairman of Bude RBL laid a wreath on behalf of the group, Dave Worth laid a wreath for the Royal Marines, Chunky Philp was parade marshal, and Sarah Mallard RAF took control of wreath laying.
Commenting on the day’s events, mayor of Bude-Stratton, Cllr Mike Dawe said: “This Remembrance Sunday on Armistice Day, we remember those who served our country and gave so much. Their courage and sacrifice should never be forgotten.
“Let us also think of and support those who continue to serve today.”
