THE Holsworthy & District Guides and Brownies held their annual ‘Thinking Day’ on Saturday, February 25, at Hatherleigh Community Hall.

Guides and Brownies from Holsworthy and Beaford, and Brownies from Hatherleigh and Boasley, celebrated Thinking Day by taking part in craft activities, a Thinking Day Ceremony and the young girls also provided entertainment for the parents.

The Guide and Brownie units that took part in the Holsworthy District Thinking Day were 1st Hatherleigh Brownies, 1st Boasley Brownies, 1st Beaford Brownies, 1st Holsworthy Brownies, 1st Beaford Guides and 1st Holsworthy Guides.

There were four different craft station, each representing a country — Australia, Scotland, China and Malawi.

Leaders from each unit organised activities based on their chosen countries.

Parents were invited to join the day for the ‘Thinking Day Ceremony and Tea Party’ and were entertained by the Guides and Brownies who put on a concert.

Each craft station had a themed crafting activity; for example, on the China table the Brownies and Guides were able to make Chinese dragons out of crafting material. For Scotland the girls created their own tartan and performed some traditional Scottish dances. They made boomerangs for the Australia themed table and finally crafted working drums on the Malawi table.

At the end of the afternoon a number of awards were presented. District Commissioner Di Westaway gave out two young leader awards from the 1st Hatherleigh Brownie unit to Annie Strawbridge and Hannah Woodhams.

Long service awards were presented to Elizabeth Swan of the 1st Boasley Brownie unit and to Holsworthy District Commissioner Di Westaway for five years.

A special 20-year award was presented to Jayne Westcott of the 1st Beaford Brownie unit.

On behalf of Holsworthy District, Margaret Cherrill, who has now moved to South Devon, was presented with a crystal bluebell vase, vouchers and a bouquet of flowers to thank her for all the hard work and support she has given in the 14 years within the Okehampton and Holsworthy Division.
