AGRICULTURAL apprentices from Cornwall and Devon have hit the capital to discuss rural issues and Brexit with a DEFRA minister and the NFU.

The Level 4 agricultural business management apprentices recently had an action packed day in London, which included a debate in the Houses of Parliament with Neil Parish MP, followed by lunch on the terrace.

Student, Ryan James, from Beaworthy, said it was ‘a great opportunity for us to be able to discuss these issues with an MP and to be able to do this in Westminster was brilliant’.

The students then went to the NFU offices in London to discuss what it was doing to support farmers.

“After speaking to the NFU, it was really interesting to learn how they see the future of the industry and how we are its future and what we need to do,” Ryan added.

Level 4 programme manger, Peter Reed, said for some it was their first visit to the capital.

“It was a great opportunity for the students to experience Westminster,” he continued.

“The chance to ask a DEFRA MP direct questions that are affecting them today and in the future with the inevitable changes heading their way was fundamental in their development.

“The discussions held with the London NFU team gave an insight to their work and how the students, as the future, need to engage with the consumer and be proud of what they produce to improve the industry’s image.”
