North Cornwall Table Tennis League week two round-up

CHAMPIONS North Hill A made it two wins from two in Division One following a 9-1 success over club rivals North Hill C on Thursday, October 23.

While the majority of matches were comfortable victories for the A team, Phil Greenwood produced a superb victory over Shirley Luckhurst to briefly make it 1-1 as he fought back from two sets down to edge a decider.

However, that was as good as it got for the newly-promoted side as Iain Oxenham and Mike Briggs secured trebles.

Across the hall, North Hill B eased to a 8-2 victory over Otterham A.

Juergen Peter and Peter Frier were both unbeaten all evening, although Crackington did secure victories via Ross Paynter and Keiron Chatterjea against Jim Rickwood. None of the 10 matches went the distance.

Bridgerule A bounced back from their opening night defeat at North Hill A with a 9-1 success at Stratton A.

The home side were without key man Elyot Burnett, but did take an early lead as captain Anth Ward saw off Mark Rowe.

But David Streak and Peter Freeburn – the latter who won five-setters against both Douglas Galley and Ian Westaway – ensured they responded in style.

The Budehaven derby between the A and B teams was postponed.

In Division Two, Altarnun C remain unbeaten and top of the table as they saw off Otterham C 7-3.

Robin Evans got the better of David Jones and David Thorpe for the visitors as well as combining to take the doubles with Stephen Parsons, but Paul Burden was unbeaten all night and his team-mates defeated Parsons and Peter Ellis.

They sit six points clear of Budehaven C who won 7-3 at Otterham B.

Budehaven saw the far from fully fit Dave Salisbury play his first-ever Division Two match and he unsurprisingly managed a treble, while Robin Worden won two despite losing a decider to James Ellis in the opener.

Ezra Jukes beat Ross Wilmshurst and Salisbury and Worden combined for the doubles as Otterham responded via Ellis’ double and Judith Cook defeating Jukes.

Bridgerule B secured the biggest victory of the week as they eased past Altarnun B 8-2.

Alan Quilter won a thriller in sudden-death 16-14 in a fifth set against Jamie Sims, although Sims didn’t let it affect him as they later defeated Shaun Collins and then Jay Brewer, both of whom got the better of Martin Ellis and Brian Holsey.

The respective Division Three North and South are in full swing.

The lower-league is designed for newcomers to the sport or players who prefer a shorter evening and is played as two-a-side.

In the North, Bridgerule C secured a 4-1 success at Budehaven F as Teresa Moule won twice as well as the doubles with Sally Quilter, although Quilter was beaten by Kory Carter.

Budehaven E and Budehaven G both enjoyed victories.

The E team ‘beat’ Stratton B despite them turning up with just Christopher Hodge who defeated Paul Turner and Jack O’Neil, while Budehaven G edged past their H counterparts.

Rudi Morley-Synclere got the better off both Jude Lewis and Aaron Tiller who proved too strong for Aaron Hockin.

However, the doubles went the way of Morley-Synclere and Hockin in four sets.

The second week of action in Division Three South saw two games.

While Pensilva A saw off their C team 5-0 with victories for Philip Hill and Paul Catley and Catley and Lisa Claydon in the doubles, there was a tight affair as North Hill D won 3-2 at Pensilva B.

The home side’s two – Anne Gibson and Hugh Pendray both won a singles – as did Jill Diggory and Jake Duffy.

However, it was the North Hill duo that held their nerve in the doubles.
