COUNTIES TWO CORNWALL

Bude 27 Perranporth 0

WITH the league season about to move into its final month, Bude consolidated their third place in the table on Saturday with a comfortable five-try victory over Perranporth at Bencoolen Meadow.

The visitors arrived with just 16 players, and on a strange afternoon, in the 57th minute the game was interrupted when referee Harry Harrison succumbed to a calf injury and was unable to continue.

But with an hour having to be played, Brewers forwards coach Dan Sanderson – a qualified referee – agreed to take the whistle.

However, within six minutes the game was called off following a neck injury to hooker Will Wright who was able to leave the field. With both sides in agreement the game was abandoned with Bude taking a 27-0 win.

With both sides having the best defence in the division bar runaway leaders Camborne Seconds, it took until the 17th minute for the opening try as Bude stole a line-out 30 metres from the Perranporth line which ended with the ball going wide for winger Cobi Yelland to power over in the corner.

Six minutes later Bude went further in front from another line-out, this time an attacking one by the home side, when a miss move saw No 8 Joe Wilson create an opening for Thomas to glide through and dot down. Again, the extras proved illusive as Thomas' conversion attempt dropped short due to the wind.

Just beyond the half-hour mark the Seasiders took their lead to three scores when another defensive line-out was poached by the home side, and with ruthless efficiency their pack drove some 30 metres up the touchline for Wilson to ground the ball over the line.

The early minutes of the second half also proved to be scoreless, with both sides' defences holding up well. But in the 49th minute the home side scored their fourth try of the afternoon, securing a bonus point in the process, as Charlie Firman dragged half of the visitors’ pack over the line with him from 15 metres. He was injured while doing so and was replaced by Hayden Chater.

Mr Harrison’s injury came just before the hour, shortly followed by the injury to Wright, however there was still time inbetween times for hooker Harvey Cholwill to finish off a blindside move from a line-out.

The sides now reconvene on Wednesday evening (April 1, 7.30pm), at The Droop for the twice postponed return league fixture.

While Bude have no game this coming Saturday, they are due to entertain Liskeard-Looe in the Second Round of the CRFU Tribute Clubs Cup next Wednesday evening, (April 8), under floodlights at Stade de Marsh (7.30pm).

Meanwhile, Bude Seconds are also in cup action, this time on Easter Saturday afternoon when they entertain Saltash Seconds in the second-round of the CRFU Tribute Duchy Cup (3pm). Bude Colts have no game over the Easter weekend, but on Sunday Bude Ladies host Truro in the Women's NC2 South West (West) (3pm).
