LAUNCESTON will look to secure their first silverware of the season this afternoon when they take on host club Wadebridge Camels in the Cornwall RFU Super Cup final (3.30pm).
The All Blacks head to the Molesworth Field looking to lay down a marker after a poor end to last season’s Regional One South West campaign where they suffered eight straight defeats to end fifth, that after being in the promotion picture until late January.
And with just a fortnight to go before their league opener at home to Topsham, joint head coaches Ian Goldsmith and Ryan Westren will hope they can start afresh.
They give first starts to their new two signings from Bude, hooker Rory Mead and Ben Hancock, the latter starting at lock despite being more accustomed to lining up at No.8.
Flanker George Harris is also in the team having moved to the area over the summer.
The rest of the side has a similar look to it with an impressive-looking bench which included new back Morgan Woods who has joined from Okehampton, plus the experience of hooker Levent Bulut and flankers Lloyd Duke and George Bone.
Scrum-half Callum Attwood, who joined over the club in the summer, is away with work until September.
Launceston got their pre-season preparations started last Friday night with a 12-10 defeat to the renamed Penzance and Newlyn at Perranporth, despite tries from Mead and skipper Tom Sandercock.
Wadebridge play in the league below – Regional Two South West – and are a tough team to beat on home soil.
They regularly finish in the top four and in front of a big crowd which will be swelled by Truro taking on Bude at 1pm in the Cornwall Cup final – will look to tear into the visitors from the off.
Looking ahead to the game, Goldsmith, who has seen son Dan leave for National League Two West outfit Redruth over the summer, said: “We’re really looking forward to it and it gives a pre-season game much more meaning which is great.
“We’ll need to get our match head on going to Wadebridge’s ground which makes it much more tricky.
“They’re always towards the top end of their league and it’ll be similar to what we found on Friday.
“They’ll look to get into us and disrupt us and with them being underdogs it means they can just go for it.”
