WEST HOCKEY LEAGUE WOMEN’S TRELAWNEY DIVISION ONE (SATURDAY)
Penzance Seconds 7 Bude 2
A THREADBARE Bude squad did themselves proud, but were ultimately beaten 7-2 in West Cornwall.
The Seasiders made the long trip with just 11 players and without a recognised goalkeeper as Chloe Hall took one for the team in the absence of Jo Timmins.
But despite this, Bude showed real determination.
In defence, Lottie Davies controlled the centre with confidence and composure, while Willow Du Plessis and Elsa Edwards held the wings firm, cutting out Penzance attacks with solid tackles.
Elsa, in only her second senior outing, was deservedly named player-of-the-match.
In midfield, Izzy Sobey, Caroline Hockridge, and Naomi Hatcher worked tirelessly to move the ball through the centre, linking play and keeping the team driving forward.
Out wide, EJ Biggadike and Charlotte Prime made some great runs down the wings, pushing the ball up into the attacking D and putting pressure on the Penzance defence.
Up front, Eleanor Rush and debutant Lulu Goaman led the attacking line with energy and determination, and took the lead from a well-worked short corner with Goaman getting the decisive touch.
Penzance, however, used their home advantage and responded quickly, taking a 3-1 lead before half-time.
The second 35 saw Bude continue to fight hard, and their efforts paid off with another well-taken short corner — a clean strike from Caroline Hockridge and a perfectly-timed finish from Naomi Hatcher on the post made it 4-2.
Despite some tired legs and a few questionable tackles from the opposition, the ladies never gave up. The final score ended comfortably in the home side’s favour, but it was a performance full of effort, teamwork, and spirit.
Bude host Newquay Seconds on Saturday (1.30pm) as they look for their first point of the season.
