WEST HOCKEY LEAGUE TRELAWNEY DIVISION ONE

Bude 5 Penzance Seconds 1

THE Seasiders produced their best performance of the season to record a second win of the campaign and pull further clear of the bottom two.

A stirring team talk from Claire Pipe and Chloe Hall galvanised Bude who saw Evie Varcoe keep her place in defence alongside Naomi Hatcher, Emily Smart and Tilly Collins.

The hosts also loaded their midfield to make it more attacking, but also allowing extra cover in defence as Katie Jackson , Briony Varcoe and Charlotte Kingdon returned to the team to the side.

Bude made an impact from the first whistle with EJ Biggadike, Mia Flynn and Caroline Hockridge instrumental in moving the ball forward, while Charlotte Prime’s mazy runs had Penzance on the back foot.

Briony Varcoe was taking defenders away to allow Katie Jackson and Izzy Sobey room to get into the D.

Bude’s breakthrough came in the ninth minute as a move that started from Bude’s defence down the right as Prime assisted Flynn who drove the ball past the defender where Briony Varcoe slotted the ball into the goal.

A minute later it was 2-0 via a similar move to the first, with Prime the scorer this time.

Penzance came back at Bude but great defending and marking from the home defence kept them at bay. As Bude recycled the ball out of defence, Kingdon raced down the left and slipped the ball into the path of Sobey who waltzed past the defender and as the keeper came out to block she passed the ball to Hall who made no mistake in smashing the ball home.

The final ten minutes of the half was a little nervy for the home side as Penzance won a short corner, but this was ably dealt with by Collins and home keeper Jo Timmins.

Bude had to stay focused and played the ball round with confidence to see out the first half.

After the break, both teams midfield players fought hard for every ball, while at the same time trying to release thir forwards.

The Penzance keeper was kept busy, making several great saves to deny Bude, and her excellence was soon rewarded as the West Cornwall outfit went up the other end and a cross to the far-post from the right was tapped in by Mackenna Swales.

Bude remained calm, and started to reproduce all their good play from the first half.

It wasn't long before they added the fourth with as continued pressure from player-of-the-match Prime, Biggadike, Sobey and Hockridge found the openings to the forwards and a lovely one-two around the defender allowed Sobey to score past the keeper.

Bude were not done on the scoring front and Prime added her second as she rounded the advancing keeper.

Penzance continued to put the pressure on Bude but couldn't get past Smart and Evie Varcoe with Hatcher on hand to clear away any loose balls.

The visitors did get a short corner with minutes to go and slipped the ball to the left where the ball was struck towards the goal. However, Timmins was able to make the save and clear the ball out of the D.

The Seasiders are back in action on Saturday when they visit Newquay Seconds at Penair Secondary School in Truro (1.45pm).
