WOMEN’S CORNWALL CUP FIRST-ROUND

Bude 3 Duchy Seconds 1

BUDE Ladies secured an impressive 3-1 victory over visiting Duchy Seconds in the first-round of the Cornwall Cup.

Such was the Seasiders’ attitude towards the game, the coaching staff and coach Tammy Snowsill – who was back on the sidelines, guiding and encouraging the team throughout which made a big difference – had a full squad of 15 players to choose from.

At the back, Jo Timmins was outstanding in goal, making several cracking saves to keep Bude in control, while her solid defensive quartet of Naomi Hatcher, Willow Du Plessis, Elsa Edwards and Tilly Collins – the latter both both in the juniors section still – held strong and showed real composure under pressure.

The midfield worked tirelessly to drive the game forward with Caroline Hockridge, Eleanor Rush and EJ Biggadike doing the hard yards in the centre, which allowed wingers Charlotte Kingdon, Mia Flynn, and junior Maeva Motsch made fantastic runs down the sides, constantly pushing play into the attacking D.

Up front, Chloe Hall, Evelyn Varcoe and Bryony Varcoe linked up brilliantly, putting the Duchy defence under continuous pressure.

The goals came from some lovely team play as Bryony Varcoe opened the scoring with a neat tap-in on the back post after a great run from the wing.

Biggadike doubled the lead with a superb strike, calmly slotting past the defenders and keeper, while Hatcher sealed the win with a well-worked short corner, timing her run perfectly to finish at the post. That after the visitors had pulled one back.

A team spokesperson said: “It was a fantastic all-round performance and a well-deserved cup win for the team.

“We now hope to take that form into our league campaign in Trelawney Division One of the West Hockey League, starting this Saturday when we host University of Plymouth Seconds (midday).
