Premier Division

Falmouth Town 2

CALLINGTON Town can consider themselves desperately unlucky not to have got something against Falmouth Town at Ginsters Marsh despite playing over an hour with ten men.

The Marshmen had the better of the opening exchanges and were unlucky not to be ahead before the controversial red card incident on 25 minutes that changed the complexion of the game.

Callington captain Dan Jefferis appeared to pull Luke Brabyn who regained his composure as the referee waved the advantage, but then was tackled well in the box and the referee brought the game back for the foul and red carded Jefferis.

Despite the numerical advantage, Callington were still in the game, but on 37 minutes their defence was finally breached as a long kick from goalkeeper Ryan Barnes went all the way through to Brabyn to slot past Josh Gilbert.

Both sides traded chances in the second-half with both goalkeepers in good form.

Then on 80 minutes, with Callington pushing for the equaliser, the visitors counter-attacked and Luke Johnson fired the ball home to seal their first league win on the road since October.

Elburton Villa 0

Launceston 0

THE Clarets maintained their recent improved form with a well-earned point at Elburton Villa.

The only change from the side which had competed so well against Bodmin Town seven days earlier saw the return of Cameron Webb up front, with Tom Savigar taking a place on the bench.

On a windy afternoon punctuated by squally showers, played on an uneven surface, this was never going to be a classic. However two well-matched sides produced an entertaining affair with a series of chances at both ends.

Elburton skipper Nick Aplin had the first on-target shot of the afternoon but his firm drive was well saved by Launceston keeper Tom Watson.

The Clarets worked their way steadily into the game with Callum Watson dominant in midfield and the young strike pairing of Webb and Louis Irwin working tirelessly.

Launceston had what appeared a clear 39th minute penalty claim denied when Jack Alexander was brought down as he ran across the box, but the game reached half-time goalless.

Tom Savigar and Mike Steele were introduced on 66 minutes as the Clarets pushed for a breakthrough, and the former came within inches of having an immediate effect. He cut in from the left and beat home keeper Jack Dixon all ends up, only to see his 20-yard drive crash against the crossbar.

Two minutes later the lively Alexander spun neatly and beat Dixon, only to see his shot hit the bar in almost exactly the same spot.

Tom Watson had to be alert at the other end although central defenders Lee Rundle and Dan Metherell kept clear chances to a minimum. Villa striker Mitch Williams did beat Watson but the referee had spotted a clear handling offence.

An enjoyable game ended with the Clarets on the front foot, but unable to turn possession into the goal their play deserved. However the point gained was enough to lift the Clarets away from the bottom two and above Camelford.

An enormous test awaits the Clarets on Saturday when leaders Exmouth Town visit Pennygillam (3pm).

The club have also released a statement following the resignation of first-team manager Mike Walton recently.

It says: “Launceston Football Club has regretfully accepted the resignation of first team manager Mike Walton.

“Mike worked tirelessly this season, during a difficult period for the football club. He felt he had taken the side as far as he could and that the time was right to step aside.

“Mike, whose son Jordan plays for the club, will always be welcome at Pennygillam where he plans to be a regular spectator.

“With only 11 league games left to play, the club will complete the 2018/19 season with team affairs under the supervision of a four-man committee, comprising senior players Mike Burke and Lee Rundle, club coach Matt Hodgetts and football secretary Keith Ellacott.

“It is anticipated that a permanent managerial appointment will be made by the summer.”

Division One (West)

Bude Town 1

Wendron United 3

Bude Town’s four-match winning run at home came to an end despite taking the lead at Broadclose Park.

Centre-half Dan Starkey headed in an early corner to give the Seasiders the advantage but the West Cornwall club, who were looking to bounce back from a 5-0 defeat to Premier outfit Saltash United in the RGB Cornwall Senior Cup only three days earlier — gradually got on top and equalised with the last kick of the first-half from a corner that was half cleared.

Wendron’s dominance paid dividends within ten minutes of the restart as they added two further goals — the first from a run from midfield past four players to slot in the far corner, before the third saw a free-kick on the edge of the box parried by Gary Dinshaw to a Wendron player who was quickest to react.

Mousehole 6

Holsworthy 0

A MULTI-talented Mousehole side put a depleted Holsworthy to the sword at Trungle Parc.

The visitors put on a bus to say thank you to their supporters who follow them around, meaning 20 of the 82 supporters inside the ground were from West Devon.

However, the home side are blessed with a brilliant academy and an ability to offer young players a platform to enable them to return to the professional game, and proved far too good for the Magpies, who were without eight players.

Mousehole were 2-0 up inside half an hour thanks to headers from strikers Gerrans James and Kieran Toland.

For Holsworthy, youngster Olti Arriku was denied in a rare attack, and they held out until the break.

In the second-half Mousehole dominated and got their third on 73 minutes as a rapid counter-attack allowed James to fire in from close-range.

Shortly after, he grabbed his hat-trick from the penalty spot following a foul by defender Carlo Chandler.

With five minutes to go, the visitors were tiring and Mousehole scored twice more before the end through Paulo Sousa and Amara Bakayoko.
