SOUTH WEST PENINSULA LEAGUE PREMIER WEST (SATURDAY)

Bude Town 2 Wendron United 1

BUDE Town made it two wins in four days as they saw off high-flying Wendron United 2-1 at Broadclose Park.

The Seasiders had won 4-1 at strugglers Dobwalls in midweek but this was a victory that will give boss Steve Hackett and his players immense satisfaction, particularly as they were without several regulars including Billy Hopcroft, Finn Reeve and Ruan Tape.

Bude took confidence from their victory at Lantoom Park and started on the front foot.

Harry Hopcroft stung the hands of Zach Telling with a long shot saved after 10 minutes and Wendron had a couple of half chances saved by Ty Rowe at the other end.

Bude took the lead 23 minutes in as after some good build-up play, the recalled Mason Tape floated a cross to the back post where the influential Harrison Swatton had peeled off his marker and finished beautifully with the instep of his weaker left foot into the far right corner.

The score stayed that way until the break and the home side were given a huge slice of luck for their second, midway through the second half.

A long ball down the right channel wasn’t dealt with and a pass-back towards Telling went over his foot, allowing the onrushing Dylan Morgan to slot into an empty net.

The visitors were reduced to 10 men due to two bookable offences, but that seemed to wake them up.

A corner was nodded in at the far post and in the end should have earned a point, but a header from close-range was somehow put over the bar.

But for Bude, it was the bit of luck they needed as they moved up to 11th with seven points from their opening five games.

Reflecting on the afternoon, Hackett told the Post: “In games gone by we would have drawn and have talked about ‘what could have been’, but we finally got the luck on our side and nobody could complain that we grabbed the three points. We deserved it for the fight, attitude and the quality chances carved out across the 90 minutes.”

He continued: “A week has made a big difference to us. We came into this week’s games without a goal scored in the league and eliminated from the (FA) Vase.

“After these two wins we have six goals and six points more on the board with a big scalp in beating one of the top teams in Wendron.

“We were missing some important players on Saturday, but a few came in from the seconds and it shows the quality of players we have at the club who can step in when needed and not let us down.

“The lads are on a high but must know that they need to focus on each game as they come. We will go to Truro on Saturday and treat them with respect, but we’ll look to get onto the front foot and have a good go at them.”
