SUB Harry Grigg scored a late winner as Holsworthy Reserves won one of the great games ever seen at Upcott Field on Saturday with a 7-6 success over Appledore Lions in the North Devon League Premier Division.

A remarkable contest which swung back and forth throughout, saw the Magpies lead 4-3 at the break, get clawed back to 6-6 before Ayre’s intervention.

Striker Joel Greening was Holsworthy’s star man with a hat-trick, while Jayden Brownjohn helped himself to two.

Craig Penberthy made a start in midfield, while recent recruit George plumb was also on the scoresheet as Holsworthy moved up to fourth in a tightly-congested table with nine points from seven games.

Morwenstow, who sit 10th, had the weekend off.

Both Bradworthy and Shebbear United took the weekend off from action in the Senior Division as they took part in the Devon Senior Cup.

Bradworthy were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Exmouth Spartans on home soil thanks to sub Sam Richards, while nearby at Shebbear, the Tangerines lost 3-1 at home to Plymouth-based Mount Gould with all the goals coming in the first half.

Ben Brace scored for Sheb who saw Ray Spear net twice for the Devonians.

In the same competition, Halwill lost 4-1 at Teignmouth Reserves.

Intermediate One outfits Putford and Holsworthy Thirds were involved in Devon Intermediate Cup ties on Saturday.

Putford headed to the outskirts of Exeter to tackle Cranbrook United and ran out 4-0 winners.

After a goalless first half, Arran Brooks gave the villagers the lead on the hour before Will Richards soon doubled the lead after being played through.

A double from Mitch Power, the latter after being set up by Will Prouse rounded off the scoring.

Holsworthy Thirds went to Priory in Exeter and were comprehensively beaten 9-1.

The Magpies scorer was Jack Irwin.

Morwenstow are also in Intermediate One, but welcomed Lizard Argyle to the Shop Playing Field in the Cornwall Intermediate Cup.

A five-goal thriller ended up going the way of Argyle who led 1-0 at the break.

Sam Jones and sub Phil Horton had the Greens ahead just after the hour, however Tristan Hawkings’ double in the final 15 minutes sent the visitors home with a place in the next round.
