Elburton Villa 3 (AET)

Launceston 1

LAUNCESTON’s return to the FA Vase after an absence of eight years ended with a 3-1 defeat at fellow South West Peninsula League Premier Division side Elburton Villa.

The Clarets were missing key striker Sam Davey and goalkeeper Josh Colwill but were still able to field a strong side and took a 17th minute lead. Jordan Walton did well to whip over a right-wing cross which Rhys Walton stretched to convert on the far post.

However, their lead lasted just eight minutes. Clarets full-back Charlie Hardcastle was adjudged to have brought down Sam Carter just inside the area and Jake Miller squeezed the resultant spot-kick past the unfortunate Tom Watson.

Watson then made a fine 34th minute block to deny Miller and ensure the sides reached the interval on level terms.

Launceston came within inches of regaining their lead when midfielder Tallan Mitchell hit the post.

However, the home team were gradually getting on top, and it came as no surprise when Josh Tattersall gave them the lead on the hour. The former Plymouth Parkway man reacted quickest to a loose ball and fired past the exposed Watson.

The game became increasingly attritional with a series of yellow cards handed out as the officials struggled to retain control.

With time running out, the Clarets pushed forward in a desperate bid to remain in the competition, but paid a heavy price when Villa broke away for Jed Smale to beat Watson.

Launceston are next in action on Saturday (3pm) when they head to newly-promoted Millbrook.

Holsworthy 2

HOLSWORTHY remain unbeaten in the league after coming from two goals down at Dobwalls.

Despite creating a couple of good chances for Joe Barker and Harry Barrett which they failed to take, the Magpies struggled to keep the ball for any length of time in the opening 45 minutes which saw them go in 2-0 down thanks to efforts from Sam Ingram and Billy Hart on 20 and 38 minutes respectively.

The scoreline would have been a lot worse if it wasn’t for some poor finishing and goalkeeper Ryan Chadwick who made a couple of good saves.

After a half-time reshuffle and introduction of Scott Percy at the break, the visitors looked a completely different side as they penned the home side back.

Debutant Neal Kinsman tested their keeper from a free-kick, Dom Abbott had a shot blocked on the line, Percy saw a 30-yard volley saved by the keeper before Barker scored a superb goal from a 20 yard free-kick into the side netting.

Holsworthy equalised on 75 minutes through an exceptional Harry Stevens goal, which saw him chest the ball and on the turn volley into the top corner from the side of the six-yard box.

Stevens missed a late chance to seal victory when he was played in with just the goalkeeper to beat. However, his chip landed on the roof of the net.

Dobwalls had a chance in injury-time but Jay Thomas’ crucial block saved a certain goal.

Abbott was then played in with seconds to go but blazed over.

Manager Liam Dart said: “I was pleased with the character and attitude to come back but feel that we should have got all three points with the chances we created in the second-half. So I’m a little frustrated with the result.”
