SOUTH WEST PENINSULA LEAGUE WALTER C PARSON LEAGUE CUP (SECOND-ROUND)

Camelford 1 Bovey Tracey 1 (Bovey Tracey won 5-4 on penalties)

CAMELFORD pushed Premier East high-flyers Bovey Tracey all the way before losing a penalty shoot-out at Trefrew Park.

The hosts went into the game full of confidence following a Cornwall Senior Cup victory at neighbours Wadebridge Town which was followed by a narrow success over Truro City Reserves, although boss Bobby Hopkinson had to do without Tom Crowe (suspension) and Shae Cardiff.

Andy Boxall, Ross Beare and Sam Watts were both available again and started, while teenage winger Joseph Parr, who went on to put in a man-of-the-match performance came in on the right of the front three.

Josh Harris, Bailee Deignan and Olly Taylor all dropped to the bench.

The opening exchanges saw chances at a premium, although visiting attacker Josh Webber forced Camels goalkeeper Josh Colwill into a good save on the quarter-hour.

Camelford gradually got on top, regularly getting to the visitors’ final third, however couldn’t quite unlock the door.

That said, their patience paid off in the 42nd minute.

Parr who caused plenty of problems throughout, got past the full-back and delivered a cross which was eventually put in by top-scorer Ryan Downing.

Bovey were much-improved after the break and after Colwill had to tip a header on to the bar, they were level on 49 minutes as a free-kick into the box was forced in by Webber.

The Moorlanders, who named a side full of quality for Step Six, weren’t at their best, while Camelford were eventually happy to see the tie go to penalties.

After both sides scored their opening three penalties – including Andy Boxall, Cowling and Jacob Ham, the decisive moment came when Dan Hocking’s penalty was brilliantly saved by Dom Aplin.

Bovey converted their fourth and Downing nailed the fifth, but veteran frontman Stuart Bowker kept his cool to get the job done and set up a home tie with Launceston.
