WERRINGTON Cricket Club is celebrating a proud moment after five of its junior players were selected to represent Cornwall Under-12s in a county tournament held in Somerset earlier this month.
Ralph Hodgson, Will Conway, Theo Wills, Henry Paynter and Harry Petherick all pulled on the Cornwall shirt, showcasing the depth of talent emerging from the Ladycross-based outfit.
The competition, staged at King's College in Taunton, brought together the best young cricketers from across the South West, providing a valuable test at county level.
Hodgson led the way with his sharp fast bowling, regularly troubling opposition batters with pace and accuracy. Conway offered control and guile as a spin bowler, while Wills impressed in the batting top order.
Paynter proved himself as a genuine all-rounder, contributing with both bat and ball and showing sharp reflexes in the field, while Petherick added further strength to the bowling attack, maintaining consistent pressure on the opposition.
Coaches praised the boys for their skill, determination and team spirit, noting that it is rare for one club to provide so many players at county level in a single age group.
Supporters from Werrington made the trip across the border to cheer on the side, adding to the sense of occasion.“This is a fantastic achievement for these lads and for the club,” said Werrington chairman, Adam Paynter, who is the father of Henry.
“To have five of our players representing Cornwall is something we’re all very proud of.”
While Cornwall faced strong opposition, the Werrington contingent played key roles throughout the tournament and gained invaluable experience.
Their performances highlight not only individual promise but also the strength of Werrington’s thriving junior programme. With years of cricket still ahead of them, these five youngsters are already making their mark on the county stage.
