LWC Drinks Cornwall Cricket League round-up — Saturday, July 14

WERRINGTON remain just 14 points behind leaders Penzance in the ECB Cornwall Premier League after thrashing fellow title challengers Redruth by 132 runs at Ladycross.

Paul Smith’s men racked up an imposing 309-7 off their 50 overs with Matthew Robins’ 112 from just 86 balls (11 fours and six sixes) the highlight, although opener Adam Hodgson’s 86 wasn’t far behind.

Smith (31), Mark Gribble (28) and Ben Smeeth (24) all contributed before off-spinner Smeeth (3-34 off 10), who was given the new ball in the absence of Tom Dinnis, ripped out the Redruth top order including the key wicket of Christian Purchase for just four as the visitors collapsed to 31-4.

Although Luke Johnson made a 66-ball 100 in reply, Redruth were all out for 177 with Robins completing a brilliant match by taking 3-12.

Callington lost their crucial clash at home to Wadebridge by three wickets despite Aidan Libby making 80 in their 197 all out.

Oliver Allsop (31) and South African Rashard Fuller (36) provided excellent support before Libby was dismissed at 153-3.

From there on, only Peter Tancock (16) and Chris Davies (16no) provided any resistance.

James Maycock hammered a rapid 52 off just 28 balls to get the Wadebridge innings off to a flyer but Callington continued to nab away at the visitors to leave them 158-7 with Harry Sawyers (3-34) the pick of the bowlers.

However Barny Jackson’s 39 not out off 31 balls ensured the Swans comfortably got over the line.

In County Division One, Launceston made it a hat-trick of victories with a tense four-wicket win over fellow strugglers Newquay at Lawhitton.

Carl O’Dwyer (56no) and debutant Nicholas Murlowski (42) rescued the Newquay innings from a perilous 75-7 after a going over from Robert Mutch (4-28 off 10) to get them up to 203 all out.

Michael Bolt (38) and Gavin Wallis (42) put on 80 in 12 overs to get Launceston going, before they both fell in quick succession to Murlowski (2-33).

At 139-5 the game was in the balance, and when Sam Pengelly departed for 50 with 32 still to get, the alarm bells started ringing. However Brandon Forsyth (19no) and Peter West (14no) kept their nerve to move the hosts out of the bottom two.

There was an equally dramatic game at Redruth with Werrington seconds beating their counterparts by four wickets.

Ian Worsnip took 5-18 off 10 overs and Jordan Duke 3-42 off nine as the Reds were all out for just 114.

Werrington’s task was made even easier by the fact they were given 20 penalty runs after a Redruth player verbally abused the umpires. But they were made to work hard as only Ian Searle (23), Ben Jenkin (22) and Worsnip with an unbeaten 11 at the end reached double figures.

It was a bad day for Luckett and Bude in Division Two East, who went into the day as the top two.

Luckett were beaten by seven wickets at Tideford despite half-centuries from Ryan Brown (83) and Jonny Hoskin (55) in their 201 all out while Bude lost a narrow encounter at home to Ladock by four wickets after being all out for 196. Paul Williams put in a good all-round performance for the hosts with an unbeaten 40 as well as taking 2-42 with the ball.

At the other end of the division, Callington seconds slipped to second bottom after a seven-wicket defeat at St Blazey despite Alex Robinson’s 118 while St Minver beat Grampound Road by five wickets in pursuit of 175 thanks to four wickets from Will Durrant and 77 from South African Warwick Rhode.

Holsworthy pulled off one of the results of the season as they won at previously unbeaten Division Three East leaders Saltash Town by two wickets.

Travis Leveson (4-30) and Matthew Shepherd (4-36) shared eight victims to restrict Saltash to 164 all out before skipper Ryan Walter’s unbeaten 44 guided them home after solid early contributions from Aiden Gerry (33) and Sam Stacey (31).

The local derby between South Petherwin and Werrington thirds went the way of the home side by five wickets.

Half centuries from Ian Wills (61no) and Trevor Dingle (57) helped Werrington post 188 although Andrew Yelland (4-44) and Ollie Peterson (4-54) kept the brakes on.

In reply, former Werrington wicket-keeper batsman Adam Warne smashed 102 with support from his father Adrian (17) and Paul Clements (23).

Tintagel’s tough season continues as St Austell thirds left Butts Field with a seven-wicket victory.

Jason Seldon (59) and Matthew Pethick (30) batted well in their total of 216 but the visitors eased home with nearly nine overs to spare.

In Division Four East, leaders Bude seconds lost by four wickets at improving Pencarrow after scoring just 131, while Luckett seconds’ excellent campaign continues after a 56-run victory over Grampound Road thirds. Martin Hill (81) and Adam Piper (51) were the main run getters in their 262-8.

Milton Abbot conceded their home clash with Launceston seconds while Delabole fell to a narrow one-wicket defeat at Newquay thirds despite Glen Burrell’s 83 in their 161-9.

Lewis Matthews made it back-to-back centuries with 111 not out as Launceston thirds thrashed Gunnislake by ten wickets in the bottom of the table clash at Lawhitton in Division Five East, while Werrington fourths were hit for 307-2 at home to Tideford seconds. Nigel Dennis made 93 and chairman Richard Jenkin made 48 in a rare appearance as they replied with 225-6.

Tintagel seconds didn’t have to make the trip to Ladock seconds as the home side conceded.

The only game involving a Post area side in Division Six East were South Petherwin seconds, who won by seven wickets at their St Neot counterparts.

Michael Searle (3-28) and Gareth Clements (3-26) shared six wickets before Roger Gerry (29no), James Cawsey (24) and Billy Martin (27no) guided them home in pursuit of 105.
