LWC?Drinks Cornwall Cricket League round-up — Saturday,?September 8
WHILE Werrington were busy winning the Premier League title on Saturday, Callington were making the long trip home from Penzance after losing by nine wickets in their final top-flight clash of 2018.
After losing stand-in opener Alex Mortimore early on, skipper Aidan Libby and Peter Tancock (39) took the score to 87 before Libby departed for 58.
From there on in, only Joe White and Oliver Allsop with 15 apiece reached double figures as Callington collapsed from 103-3 to 139 all out.
Penzance knocked off the runs in just 18.2 overs, but events at Werrington ensured they ended up a point short.
In County Division One, Werrington seconds ended their season on a disappointing note as they made the long trip to Rosudgeon and were thrashed by 140 runs.
Ben Ellis made an unbeaten 170 for the home side in their 286 all out before taking five wickets as the visitors were all out for just 146.
For Werrington, skipper Mark Hodgson bowled tidily to take two for 40 and Adam Jenkin’s first bowl of the season saw him take two for three off five balls, although Danny Warne went for 63 off his five overs.
With the bat, Darren Webber made an enterprising 48 off just 29 balls while Jenkin made 26.
There was an even tougher afternoon for Launceston as they were hammered by ten wickets at runners-up Troon.
Only Michael Bolt and Robert Mutch with 27 and 18 respectively reached double figures in their 77 all-out before Troon knocked it off in less than 12 overs.
Youngster Shane Davey did impress going for just 12 in his three overs on debut, but after previously winning four games on the trot to survive, Launceston be hoping for a much calmer season in 2019.
In Division Two East, runners-up Bude enjoyed a nine-wicket victory at Boconnoc in their pursuit of 216.
Thomas Hall notched his first league ton a week previously and was at it again making an unbeaten century (116), while captain Mark McManus (40no) and Warren Rumble (34) provided valuable support.
Luckett’s seven-run victory over close challengers Ladock meant they finished third.
Despite swapping their batting order around, they racked up 257 all out with the Brown brothers Ryan (76), Marc (42 off 23) and Richard (23) all making valuable contributions.
In response, four bowlers took two wickets apiece with Mark Southcott (2-40 off 11) the pick.
St Minver ended up finishing seventh after thrashing relegated Callington seconds by seven wickets.
The home side could only make 105 all out at Moores Park, that after openers James Moon (17) and Adam Snowdon (20) put on 42 for the first wicket.
Charlie Hawken (4-25) and Rob Hawken (3-25) shared seven wickets before the visitors passed the target with more than 25 overs to spare thanks to Warrick Rhode’s unbeaten 39 and 22 from Antony Ash.
In Division Three East, Holsworthy’s final game of their first ever season in the fourth-tier ended with an emphatic seven-wicket victory over visiting Tintagel at Stanhope Park.
Tintagel could only make 155 all out with skipper Ryan Pooley top-scoring with 45. Oisin O’Kelly took three for 22 although Sam Stacey was man-of-the-match with 3-39 and 62 after opener Jack May made 45.
Werrington thirds made it three consecutive wins to end the season after winning a low-scoring thriller at their St Austell counterparts.
Trevor Dingle made 23 in their 109 all out which seemed a formality.
However, Daniel Jenkin (3-19) set the wheels in motion before Nick Ward came onto collect the remarkable figures of four for 1 to bowl the visitors out for 103.
Launceston seconds were crowned Division Four East champions despite losing by six-wickets to Bugle at Lawhitton.
The home innings got off to a quick start through Darren Jenkin (22) and David Cox (15).
However, Martin Hutchings (2-44) dismissed them both which led to number three Phil Spry (60 no) having to marshal the rest of the batting line-up to a decent score.
In the end, he found an ally in Ryan Christophers, who thrashed an unbeaten 40 in less than eight overs at the crease to get them up to 176-7.
In reply, the dangerous Nathan Toms, who went on to make 67, was dropped at slip early on.
Launceston knew they needed to get four wickets to win the league, and at 103-0 the omens did not look good.
However, David Sillifant (3-28) came on and took three wickets in as many overs as Bugle slipped to 123-4.
Nigel Couchman (32) and Hutchings (20) then joined forces to seal victory and wait for news from Bude while Launceston celebrated knowing they had secured a county final against Veryan at Constantine on Saturday (1pm).
Bugle’s win meant that if Bude seconds lost at home to Newquay thirds, they could go up.
However, Newquay who were boosted by the inclusion of Ian Gray and Darren Sambells, who normally play in the Devon League, won by eight wickets with Tavistock first team opener Gray making an unbeaten 114.
Earlier, home skipper Gordon made a brilliant 138 not in a total of 244-7. The next highest score was John Snell’s 20.
The league management committee are currently investigating the game, so no final decision has yet been made on who joins Launceston in Division Three next season.
Elsewhere across the league, Delabole beat eight-man Luckett seconds by four wickets at Chapel Field.
Skipper Ian Roberts made 46 and Patrick Thompson 27 in their 134 all out with Adrian Pooley (3-14) and Regan Burrell (3-36) among the wickets.
Delabole changed their batting order around and scraped home thanks to Glen Burrell’s 36 and Davey Tilley’s 25. Veteran Alan Skeet took four for 55.
Milton Abbot avoided finishing bottom after easing past Pencarrow by 89 runs at Baxter Park.
Jake Phillips top scored with 62 and captain Richard Baxter made 36 in their 184-8. Pencarrow, who finished just above the home side, were all out for 95 with Tom Rickard (4-41) and Peter Williams (3-22) doing the bulk of the damage.
Of the four Post area teams in Division Five, only Werrington fourths emerged victorious as they beat runners-up Saltash St Stephens by 54 runs after posting 255-2 thanks to an unbeaten 106 from Oliver Bailey. Marcus Curnow’s unbeaten 57 coupled with Nigel Dennis’ 45 helped them get there.
In reply, the home side did well to restrict the visitors to 201-7. Tom Gribble took three for 48.
Despite finishing sixth, Werrington face a promotion play-off at South Petherwin against the home club for the right to play in Division Five East next season.
Petherwin finished second in Division Six.
Launceston thirds lost their final game by just 12 runs at Tideford seconds.
After some poor early catching, they restricted the home side to 157-8 off their 40 overs with Sam Bunn (2-40), Paddy Webber (2-47) and Paul Bunn (2-7) among the wickets.
Andrew Baker led the reply with 42 but a failure to kick-on from the rest meant they came up short.
Gunnislake finished their season with another loss, this time at St Blazey seconds.
Adam Emmerson’s prolific run of form continued with 68 but they were all out for 145.
George Jefferies had the excellent figures of three for 28 off his ten overs, but the home snuck home.
Tintagel finished second bottom after losing by seven wickets at home to Wadebridge thirds.
Richard Pethick (37no) and extras (39) were the biggest contributors in a well below-par 111-8 which was knocked off inside 22.3 overs. Tom Harris bowled well for Tintagel to claim two for 24.
This weekend sees the county finals and promotion play-offs played with Launceston seconds taking on Veryan at Constantine and South Petherwin seconds welcoming Werrington fourths (1pm).
See next week’s Post for a full round-up of Saturday’s events.
