Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League report and summary scores — Saturday, July 20

FORMER skipper Ben Smeeth signed off from Werrington duty for a month with a virtuoso performance as they eased past Callington in the ECB Cornwall Premier League on Saturday.

Smeeth is heading to Australia to visit family but showed his undoubted class with both bat and ball.

After openers Adam Hodgson (55) and Adam Jenkin (23) had seen off a probing new ball spell from Aidan Libby (0-24 off 10) which meant it took the visitors 20.5 overs to make 50, Smeeth and Hodgson took the score to 107-2 before the latter was run-out by Jim Shorten with just over 20 overs to go.

From there on, Smeeth and former Callington favourite Matt Robins accelerated brilliantly, bringing up the 150 in the 39th over before the visitors plundered 112 in the final 11.2 overs.

Smeeth made 76 off 64 balls with Robins ending unbeaten on 73 off 66. Skipper Paul Smith had time to make 13 off just five balls at the end as they eventually ended on 262-3.

Smeeth has been pressed into opening the bowling in recent weeks and again kept things tight, going for 34 off his ten overs as well as dismissing openers Aidan Libby (10) and Dan Carroll (19).

First change bowler Dan Barnard ensured any hope of a repeat of Callington’s Hawkey Cup semi-final victory last month were extinguished as he dismissed Toby May, Peter Tancock and Yannick Leonard to make it 43-5.

Alex Robinson (28) and Nick Parker then added 53 before Robinson was caught for 28.

Adrian Robins, making a rare appearance went second ball, leaving them in trouble at 96-7 and in danger of not getting any batting bonus points.

Parker was the hero in the semi-final and again stood up, adding 96 for the last three wickets.

Adam Snowdown (10) and stand-in skipper Alex Mortimore (18) both contributed but it was Parker who made 65, which included four fours and four towering sixes.

His heroics allowed them to get four bonus points.

While the first team eased to victory, Werrington seconds are now 32 points from safety with seven games to go after losing by eight wickets at home to Lanhydrock.

With skipper Mark Hodgson absent through illness, stand-in Ben Jenkin won the toss and chose to bat.

However they were dismissed in just 21.5 overs for 65.

Although Nick Adams was caught behind off the first ball of the match, Nick Ward (18) and Danny Warne (11) took the score to 34 before Warne’s dismissal started one of the craziest periods ever seen at Ladycross.

Spinner Fergus Baker took a hat-trick with the first three balls of his spell as he had Ward caught by James Maycock before trapping Darren Johns lbw and having Mark Taylor caught behind by wicketkeeper Conor McNamara.

Two further wickets fell at 39 before they fell to 45-8.

Dan Warring (9) and Ian Searle (12) added 20 but the innings was all over at 65 with Baker claiming 6-14 and Jonathan Harris (3-14).

The visitors then strolled home in 15 overs with Maycock making a quick 33 alongside James Starkie-Old’s 14 and Harris’ unbeaten 16.

Ward (2-10) took a couple of late wickets with his off-spin.

Launceston ensured a potential banana skin at St Austell seconds as they came away from Wheal Eliza with 19 points.

The visitors’ batting was once again reliant on Sam Pengelly and Kevin Worth as they totalled 197 before being bowled out with more than 11 overs to go.

After the top order failed to leave them in trouble at 64-5, Pengelly and Worth added 45 until Worth was caught for 22.

For once Launceston’s lower order battled with 87 being added for the last four wickets, the highlight of which was a 50 partnership between Pengelly (88) and Ryan Christophers who made 18.

St Austell, who have yet to win since promotion, got off to a steady start and reached 95-3 with Jonathan Grey on 61.

However, once the division’s leading wicket-taker Robert Mutch (2-23) was brought back on and bowled Grey, Launceston went to work as Matthew Bloomfield (3-29) tore into the middle-order.

Pengelly completed a fine all-round game with 2-23 as St Austell were eventually dismissed 51 short of their target.

In Division Two East, St Minver are now 13 points off safety as St Erme leapfrogged them out of the drop zone with a five-wicket victory at Castle Field.

Minver could only muster 164 all out thanks to Ryan Pooley’s 54 and 23 from Steve Hawke, before the hosts eased home with five wickets and nearly nine overs to spare. Charlie Hawken claimed 3-51.

Bude earned their sixth win in seven as they eased past bottom side Ladock by six wickets at Crooklets.

After sending the visitors in, Ladock were bowled out for 149. For once it wasn’t the spinners who did all the damage as Matt Mansbridge (2-33) and Jack Horwell (3-34) shared five of the wickets to fall.

In response, Matt Williams led the chase with an unbeaten 43 with Warren Rumble (28) and Andrew De Rosa (21no) contributing 20s.

Luckett’s poor league form continued on Saturday as they lost by four wickets at home to Grampound Road seconds.

After choosing to bat at Chapel Field, Luckett were bowled out for 193 with Richard Brown making 45 and Luke Brenton and Andrew Hoskin 30 apiece.

Like the Luckett innings, the Grampound Road response started positively with the top three each making between 29 and 33.

However once they were dismissed, a collapse ensued with Matt Shapland (2-31) the pick.

But Sam Dunstan (40no) and Stephen Matthews (24no) held their nerve to make the long trip home a happy one.

Bottom club Launceston seconds breathed life into their Division Three East survival bid as they beat St Neot by 17 runs at Lawhitton.

After another top-order wobble, David Sillifant (37) found support from Tom Davey (16) and David Cox (14) to stabilise the innings before an entertaining 28 not out from Mark Forshaw got them up 143-8.

St Neot got off to a good start at 34-1 after 10 overs and looked odds on to win.

But from then on they struggled to score on a tough pitch and eventually finished on 126-9.

Sillifant (1-10) and 14-year-old Shane Davey (2-23) bowled 22 overs between them for just 33 runs while Davey’s brother Tommy took two important wickets.

Launceston are now just four points behind their Bude counterparts after they lost a thriller at South Petherwin by two runs.

The hosts knocked up 235-5 from their 45 overs with Adrian Warne making 62, while Nick Gerry (46), Taylor Gerry (42) and Paul Clements (46no) all passed 40.

Gary Moore bowled tidily for Bude, taking 2-39 off 12 overs.

The coastal club made a real go of their target but came up just short.

After openers Derek Piper (61) and Gordon Wint (21) got the innings off to a flier, Matt Whitefield (73no) carried on the momentum.

Charlie Gliddon made 17 from number five but as the run-rate required soared, so did Bude’s desperation to get runs as they lost three run-outs towards the end.

Adrian Clements was the star in the field for Petherwin, taking 4-57 with his left-arm spin as well as administering two crucial run-outs at the death.

Whoever wins out of Bude and Launceston on Saturday could overtake Roche seconds and out of the bottom two as they were well beaten at Holsworthy, who’s prospects of an unbeaten season show no signs of slowing down.

After being sent in, Holsworthy totalled 234-9. After the early loss of the in-form Aiden Gerry, Skipper Ryan Walter batted through for an unbeaten 69 while the fireworks came through opener Jack May’s 64 and Matt Shepherd’s 41.

Roche’s reply never got started as they were all out for just 83 although at 34-6 it looked as if they may not even get a batting point.

For the hosts, Shepherd (3-28) George Wilcox (3-12) and Rob Mitchell all claimed thee wickets apiece.

Tintagel are now 27 points clear of the bottom two after thrashing Callington seconds by 110 runs at Butts Field.

Their 269-8 was made possible by the generosity of the Callington bowling which saw them give away 79 extras, 69 of which were wide.

When they did bowl straighter, Ryan Pooley (48), Matthew Pethick (41no) and Jordan Burnard (40) all reached forty while Ben Lane (25) and Jason Seldon (22) also contributed.

Toby Morgan (3-46) and Martin Hunn (2-54) shared five wickets.

Callington mustered 159 in reply. Lee Cosgrove top-scored with 44 while Toby Beresford-Power (33) and Andrew Jones (20) both passed 20.

For Tintagel, Simon Fry took 3-42 while Lane concluded a good day’s work with 3-41.

With Delabole against Luckett seconds being rescheduled to Delabole Carnival, the only Post area club in action were Werrington thirds, who won a thriller by two wickets at promotion-chasing and at the same time keep their own hopes alive.

Werrington got off to a dream start as Freddie Ward (3-27) dismissed key man Nathan Toms without scoring before the same bowler got rid of Mathew Chadwick at 10-2.

However Bugle recovered from 51-4 and 112-7 to make 162-9, 54 of which came from opener Paul Gribble.

Werrington’s reply got off to an equally bad start as they fell to 56-4 despite Adam Paynter’s 27.

However skipper Dan Jenkin then enjoyed partnerships of 55 with Simon Bishop (17) and 25 with James Adams (23) before his dismissal for 40 saw them slide to 153-8.

But Jack Gribble kept his cool with an unbeaten 17 as they moved up to second in the table above their hosts.

Crucially Bugle have a game in-hand on the rest of the promotion-chasers when they entertain Lanhydrock seconds.

But Werrington knows that if they win the rest of their five fixtures they’ll be promoted back to the fourth-tier.

South Petherwin seconds continue to cement fourth spot in Division Five East after an easy victory at Tideford seconds on Saturday.

All seven of their batsmen used reached double figures in their 236-5 with James Cawsey’s 47 the highest, although Michael Clements (46) and Gareth Clements (45) were also in the forties.

Cawsey made it a day to remember as he then took 4-14 with the ball as the hosts were rolled over for just 88. Peter Dingle (3-28) and Billy Martin (2-23) shared other five wickets to fall besides a run-out.

Milton Abbot would have been disappointed not to have won at second-placed St Blazey seconds after holding them to 152-7 thanks to three wickets for Tom Rickard (3-40).

However their response never got started with only Paul Crocker (35no) making any telling contribution in their 94 all out.

In the basement division, leaders St Minver seconds fell to just a second defeat of the season at home to local rivals Tintagel seconds.

After being sent in, only openers Jake Keast and Matt Gilbert, with 24 apiece got started as they were dismissed for a below par 138.

Ollie Beaument and Aaron Washer claimed three wickets apiece before Washer thrashed 77 in response.

Martin Seldon played the cool hand with 39 as they eased to victory with ten overs to spare.

Nigel Dennis struck his third century of the season as Werrington fourths hammered ten-man Gunnislake at Ladycross.

Dennis thrashed 144 in their mammoth 321-3, which was well supported by Nick Wills’ 79 and debutant Gareth Cox, who made 58.

Gunnislake then plodded to 81-7 in reply with Brian Martin’s 31 the best.

The evergreen Tony Scown claimed the remarkable figures of 4-11 off his ten overs.

Launceston thirds never got the chance to warm up for the visit of Werrington on Saturday (1.30pm) as Menheniot-Looe thirds conceded their clash at Duloe.
