Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League report and summary scores — Saturday, July 27
CALLINGTON missed a golden chance to take a big step towards survival after losing by 23 runs at St Austell in the ECB Cornwall Premier League on Saturday.
The East Cornwall side bowled superbly to bowl the Saints out for 150 at Wheal Eliza as West Indian spinner Yannick Leonard claimed 5-23 off his ten overs.
Adam Snowdon provided great support with 3-32 while both Aidan Libby and Harry Sawyers went at less than three an over on a tough track to bat on.
Callington’s innings got off to a solid enough start as openers Aidan Libby (17) and Toby May (11) put on 31.
Although they had both gone as well as Leonard at 50-3, the in-form Nick Parker (43) and Joe White (6 off 50) added 42 before Parker was trapped lbw by Curtis Dalby (3-15).
Callington tried to grind their way to the winning post and looked well set as they got to 127-6.
But the wicket of James Moon for 20 saw them lose their final four wickets at 127 to hand St Austell the points.
Werrington continue to keep winning but look set to battle it out with Redruth for the Premier League runners-up spot as Penzance remain 27 points ahead with six games remaining.
Werrington need the West Cornwall club to lose before they meet at Ladycross later this month.
On Saturday they eased past visiting Grampound Road by 86 runs.
After choosing to bat, Adam Jenkin went for a duck before Adam Hodgson and Australian Jono Baldock (23) added 52 before the latter was dismissed by Sri Lankan Ravindra Karunarathna.
Hodgson’s job at the top of the order is to provide a platform and when he went for a patient 57, Werrington were 142-3.
From then on, the innings was accelerated superbly by Matt Robins, Mark Gribble (45 off 35) and Nick Lawson (22 off 9) as they finished on 285-6, Robins ending up unbeaten on 115 from 95 balls against his old club, in an innings which included 14 fours and three sixes.
‘The Road’ have some dangerous batsmen in their side but once skipper David Hoskings, Chris Roberts and Karunarathna had all departed at 54-4 the game was all but done.
To their credit, Grampound continued to hit out and eventually were dismissed for 199, Matt South top-scoring with 67 from just 51 balls.
Baldock rounded off an excellent all-round game with 4-28 while Dan Barnard (2-28) and the returning Ian Worsnip (2-32) were also in the wickets.
In County Division One, Launceston won their third successive game to move up to seventh with a six-wicket win over Rosudgeon at Lawhitton.
The visitors chose to bat in North Cornwall and when they got to 110-2 looked set for a big total with opener James Stephens and star man Giles Lawrence (34) at the crease.
However the dismissal of Lawrence and then Stephens for 67 saw them slide to 120-4 before eventually making 167 thanks to 27 from Ben Ellis.
Sam Pengelly’s brilliant season continued as he took 5-32 including a hat-trick. Robert Mutch (3-16) and Ryan Christophers (2-54) provided the support.
The hosts don’t have the best record of chasing decent totals but made light work of it.
Mutch thrashed 33 off just 25 balls in an opening stand with Michael Bolt (16) before Michael Diebner (36), Dan Tilley (58no) and Pengelly (11) took them to victory with more than ten overs to spare.
Werrington seconds travelled down to Troon with a scratch side and did well to pick up six points.
The hosts batted first and racked up 305-6 with Dan Jenkin making 122 and Jamie Goldsworthy an unbeaten 76.
Nick Ward claimed 3-39 with his off-spin.
At 63-8, it looked as if the hosts may get less than 80, but Jordan Duke, making his first appearance of the season, hammered 43 from number ten, adding 67 for the final two wickets with Robert Dymond and Cameron Wakefield (11no).
St Minver picked up just their second victory of the season in Division Two East as they beat eight-man Saltash Town by nine wickets.
However their failure to bowl their visitors out means they lost three crucial points in the battle for survival, especially as St Erme beat Tideford.
Free-falling Saltash eked their way to 134-5 with Nick Carpenter and Chris Simpson making 40 and 33 apiece.
Cornwall Over 50s bowler Dennis Brown had the excellent figures of 3-24.
Minver raced to their target in 21 overs, skipper Ben Hawken making an unbeaten 77.
Luckett also stopped the rot with an excellent five wicket win at high-flying Menheniot-Looe.
Andrew Hoskin (3-37) and Mark Southcott (2-24) shared five wickets for just 61 between them as the hosts made 208-8 thanks to a late rally which included forties from Mohamad Durani Zubair (45) and Tom Rogers (47).
Luckett openers Luke Brenton (58) and Rich Brown (69) made a nice dent in the chase before Hoskin completed a fine all-round game by guiding his side to victory with 32 not out.
Bude missed the chance to cement fourth place as they lost by 57 runs at Wadebridge seconds.
Although Matt Mansbridge dismissed the hard-hitting Neil Meneer for a duck, the Swans cruised to 261-6 with Tom Wood’s 76 the highest.
Five bowlers were in the wickets for the visitors.
Openers Matt Hookway and Matt Williams were dismissed at 13-2 before fought back to secure maximum batting points.
Mark McManus’ 40 was the main contribution as they got to 105-5 before Mansbridge thrashed the ball to all parts in making an unbeaten 71 as they ended on 204-7 at Egloshayle Park.
Launceston seconds are off the bottom of the table for the first time since May as they won by 25 runs at their Bude counterparts in Division Three East.
After being sent in on an excellent pitch and rapid outfield, Darren Jenkin — dropped twice in two balls on 48 — hammered the bowling to all parts in his 114 as he and opener Jake Barber put on 138 for the second wicket.
The dismissal of Jenkin slowed the game down for the next few overs as spinner Mike Taylor ran through the visitors on his way to 4-47.
However David Sillifant (45no) and David Cox (21no) then added an unbroken 54 in less than six overs to set a challenging 262 to win.
Openers Derek Piper (24) and Gordon Wint got off to a flier as they added 48 in eight overs.
But the dismissal of the injured Piper allowed the visitors to gain some momentum. Wint eventually found an ally in the in-form Matt Whitefield as they added 102 before Whitefield was yorked by Barber for an excellent 33.
At this stage the hosts were the favourites but then collapsed. Wint brought up a superb century but was out shortly after trying to ramp David Cox for 102.
From there on, Barber (4-25) ran through the middle-order as Bude ended up on 236-7.
Launceston are now third bottom after South Petherwin did them a favour by winning at Roche seconds.
That looked a distant dream when the North Cornwall side lost five early wickets. But opener Adam Warne and Adrian Clements put on nearly 200 for the sixth wicket with Clements making 78 and Warne a superb 141 not out.
Roche made a real game of it when they batted. Opener Shaun Trudgeon did a Warne as he made 136 but besides Michael Sweet’s 31 the rest of the top order failed to get started.
Skipper Dean Jeffery made an unbeaten 20 at the end, but they were eventually bowled out 27 runs short.
Three of the wickets to fall were run-outs while Clements (2-20), Ollie Peterson (2-57) and Caleb Forsyth (2-61) all took two apiece.
Holsworthy’s incredible unbeaten record finally went at St Blazey on Saturday as they lost by 12 runs despite Matt Shepherd’s heroics.
Shepherd ran through the early order on his way to figures of 4-51 while Jack Greening (2-40) and George Wilcox (3-40) also bowled well. But seven of the Blazey batsmen reached double figures, while 36 wides were sent down in their 179.
In reply, the visitors — missing key batsmen Jack May and Ryan Walter fell to 0-2 before Shepherd went to work, almost singlehandedly winning the game by himself.
He thrashed 94 in an innings that included five fours and 11 sixes. 57 came off Ian Chambers’ three overs.
However his dismissal to the impressive Keith Reid (6-44) changed the game. Although Rob Mitchell (23no) did his best, the tail couldn’t quite get the job done as they lost for the first time since September.
Elsewhere, Ryan Pooley produced one of the best all-round performances of the year in the division as Tintagel hammered Newquay seconds at the Newquay Sports Centre.
Despite slipping to 23-3, Pooley’s 94 coupled with a quickfire 62 from Ben Lane, 32 not out from Matt Pethick and Jason Seldon’s 28 allowed Tintagel to reach 267-7.
After James Ellis (2-32) dismissed key men Tommy Rodda (15) and Chris Jordan (0) in the space of three balls, Pooley then went to work, taking 6-28 off just seven overs as the hosts made just 103.
In the fifth-tier, Werrington thirds remain on course for an immediate return to Division Three East as they beat visiting Delabole by 80 runs.
After choosing to bat, they got off to the worst possible start as Michael Barrett (3-31) and Jack Oulton dismissed the top four for just 18 between them.
But a brilliant recovery was then staged thanks to Cornwall youngster James Adams (56) and Simon Bishop (47).
Once they departed, Jack Gribble (22), Ben Sonely (30no) and Keith Moore (25no) all chipped in to guide them to 206-7.
Although Gribble (2-36) then dismissed openers Adrian Pooley and Barrett for four apiece, Glen Burrell (39) and Drew Burnard (36) got stuck in.
But their dismissals saw them collapse to 126 all out as left-arm spinner Tom Bailey claimed 5-31.
Luckett seconds remain third bottom as they were well beaten at home to their Lanhydrock counterparts.
Steve Brown’s 4-47 was the best for the hosts as the Bodmin-based club racked up 251-7 with Jamie Taylor making 63.
Luckett got to 109-4 in reply thanks to Martin Budge’s 50, but once he departed the end was nigh.
In Division Five East, South Petherwin seconds still have an outside chance of promotion if they can win their final four games.
On Saturday they defeated Pencarrow by seven wickets at Kennards House.
Pencarrow reached 206-7 off their 40 overs with James Cawsey (3-43) and Peter Dingle (2-36) sharing five of the wickets to fall.
Openers Cawsey (43) and Michael Clements (58) got the innings off to another rapid start before Roger Gerry (41no) and Adrian Martin (27no) ended proceedings in the 31st over.
It was a day to forget for Milton Abbot as they lost by 210 runs at home to St Neot seconds.
Keith Marks carried his bat for 161 not out in St Neot’s massive 345-3 before the weakened hosts decided to bat the overs and end on 135-6. Richard Baxter made 41 while opener Paul Crocker batted the whole innings for his 34.
Gunnislake pulled off their best result of the season as they beat promotion-chasing Liskeard by 199 runs.
They were boosted by the inclusion of Andy Astley, who was back in the country on holiday with son Harrison, and he made 98 in their 260-6. Adam Emmerson (60) and Harrison Astley (36) also got stuck in.
It was then the turn of George Jefferis to enjoy a stellar performance. He dismissed the league’s leading run-scorer Andrew Cobb off the first ball of the chase before going on to finish with 6-31 off his nine overs.
Harrison Astley rounded off a great game with 3-20 as Liskeard made just 63.
Liskeard’s defeat means St Minver seconds are 25 points clear in the race for the title after a seven-wicket victory at St Austell fourths.
St Austell were bowled out for just 81 with Nigel Hocking’s 4-28 the best for St Minver although Charlie Edwards (2-16) and Russell Donnelly (2-4) also chipped in.
In reply, Joe Baker (3-31) took out the top three but 20s from Matt Gilbert (23) and Luke Osborne (21) saw them home.
The local derby at Launceston was won by the home side as they beat Werrington fourths by five wickets with a ball to spare.
Extras was the top-scorer with 42 in Werrington’s 211 all out which saw 32 and 31 respectively from openers Nick Wills and James Turner.
For Launceston, Jack Bellamy took 3-42 while Paul Bunn (2-31) and Emma Barnes (2-28) were also in the wickets.
The home response was dominated by Lewis Matthews, who hammered 97, and veteran Simon Wilton who made an unbeaten 72.
Once Matthews departed caught and bowled to youngster Bailey Vanstone (2-12), another junior, Ben Bryant added a priceless 20 to help Launceston thirds over the line.
Tintagel remain sixth after a comfortable victory over bottom side St Stephen seconds at Butts Field.
Their imposing total of 287-2 was built around Martin Seldon’s 136 not out while Richard Pethick (56) and Stephen Roach (32no) provided the support.
St Stephen picked up maximum batting points in reply as they ended on 203-8, debutant Alec Turner took 4-16 and Tom Harris 2-40.
