Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League Division Two East round-up – Saturday, May 16

PROMOTED sides Tintagel and Menheniot-Looe were brought back down to earth with a bump on Saturday as both were thrashed by title hopefuls Wadebridge Seconds and Lanhydrock respectively.

The Knights had seen off relegated St Austell Seconds last weekend at Butts Field, but found Wadebridge’s bowling line-up too much to handle as they were shot out for just 110.

Off-spinner Charlie Ellis (3-23) took the new ball and proved tough to get away while Ollie Bate and Jamie Beare took the big wickets respectively of Leo Agacy and Ryan Pooley (40-4).

Things got worse as they slipped to 74-8, which included 2-17 from Steve Gunner, before tailenders Jack Minehan (16) and Freddie Knowles (18) dug in to reach three figures.

With rain forecast, the Swans sent Jamie Beare up to open and he reached his half century in just 14 balls and made 65 off 20 as the winning runs came in nine overs.

Menheniot were bundled out for just 106 at Lanhydrock who raced to a seven-wicket success in 16 overs.

Wickets tumbled throughout as they slipped to 80-9 with only Aussie Lachie Embleton (21) and Steve Kidd (15) reaching double figures as change bowlers Ben Attfield (3-18) and Ruben Turner (3-22) ran riot.

Peter Swinford (17) and Brian Caddy (13no) saw the hundred up, but the chase was led by stand-in opener Simon Benney’s unbeaten 43. Christian James (21no) provided the quick finish.

Nearby at St Austell, Bude’s New Zealander Charlie Hoban struck a majestic century as they racked up 260-7 at Wheal Eliza.

Coming in at 33-3 following a going over by Tom Rosevear (4-36), Hoban, who was dropped on just four, put on 150 with skipper Warren Rumble (72) before late order contributions from Andrew De Rosa (10), Matt Mansbridge (15) and Matt Williams (10no) gave them a decent score to defend.

The dangerous Steve Raven (44) tucked into the visiting seam attack as they raced to 86-2 inside 14 overs before the rain set in.

Holsworthy and Callington both picked up a healthy amount of points at Stanhope Park, although the visitors would have been left extremely frustrated by the weather.

Reduced to 35 overs a side, the Devonians amassed 150-9 with Jack Greening (32), Brendan Harris (27) and skipper Ryan Walter (39no) getting starts.

The spin duo of Rich Brown (1-20 off 7) and Harvey Poad (4-35) slowed any momentum.

Cally then raced along to 67-0 which included 37 from James Brenton, and although Greening bowled superbly for his 3-24 off his seven, the Cornishmen were 11 away from victory with four overs in-hand when they went off.

Champions St Blazey eventually eased to a five-wicket home success against visiting Werrington Seconds.

Werrington chose to bat and saw opener Paul Miller (68) and teenager George Rickard put on 155 for the second wicket, Rickard making 83 off 100 balls.

However, they failed to seriously kick on towards the end, reaching 211-5.

Werrington struck twice early on including the big wicket of South African overseas Henro Bouwer to Freddie Ward for just six, and although Sam Smeeth sent down nine overs for 31 and bowled Matt Bray for 20, home skipper Rory Dixon’s 96 plus contributions from Olly Mitchell (41) and Paul Carne (24no) ensured a comfortable win.
